Satellite SOS is becoming a common feature on new smartphones and threatens to make devices like Garmin’s inReach Messenger obsolete. But Garmin can coexist with new phones – Google has partnered with Garmin Response emergency response coordination services for the Satellite SOS feature on the new Pixel 9 series.

Currently, this service is only available in the US and only for users of the new Pixel 9 series: Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold. Older models are not supported.

Garmin Response handles more than 17,000 SOS activations every year in more than 150 countries. But then again, Google is only supporting satellite SOS in the US right now. Apple started this way too – perhaps once all the kinks are ironed out, Google will expand the service to new markets as well. Garmin is already working with a global network of search and rescue professionals, coast guards, embassies and other organizations that can get you out of trouble.

Brad Trenkle, co-chief operating officer of Garmin, says, “Garmin welcomes the opportunity to expand its proven, premium satellite emergency response coordination services to the Android ecosystem, starting with the Google Pixel 9 in the U.S. Each year, Garmin Response supports thousands of SOS activations, potentially saving lives in the process. We look forward to working closely with Google to help people connect with emergency services when they need it.”

Google has another partner in this, Skylo. Skylo is a non-terrestrial network (NTN) service provider, meaning it works with several satellite operators and carriers around the world to provide emergency connectivity in areas where there is no cell or Wi-Fi connectivity.

Skylo’s network operates 24/7 globally, so this is no obstacle to a wider expansion of the Pixel 9 satellite SOS functionality. And, perhaps, even more.

Skylo has worked with both Google’s Pixel team and the Android team to create a “direct-to-device” satellite connectivity feature. Android 15 will have native support for satellite messaging, allowing other smartphone makers to join in.

“Skylo is honored to be the satellite service partner for Google Pixel. Our service has been carefully developed in collaboration with Google’s Pixel and Android teams, as well as all of our supporting ecosystem partners,” said Parth Trivedi, co-founder and CEO of Skylo.
