Google announces Nano Banana Pro image tool, says it’s based on Gemini 3 and suitable for professionals
Just days after introducing Gemini 3, Google is now updating its popular Nano Create AI tool, which lets people create, modify and edit images. The new tool is called Nano Banana Pro and Google is calling it a significant leap forward.

Nano has been arguably Google’s most popular AI tool since its launch a few months ago, even more so than Gemini AI. Now, just days after launching its sensational Gemini 3 AI model, the company is updating the Nano Banana too. Today the company is introducing the Nano Banana Pro, which is based on the Gemini 3 and comes with a number of improvements and powerful additions.
While Google is retaining the goofy name for its AI image tool for now, the company is also calling it Gemini 3 Pro Image, hinting that in the future it may rebrand Banana to a more consistent naming scheme.
Given that the Nano Banana Pro is based on the Gemini 3, it’s getting some powerful new tools. In particular, it’s got the ability to work with text and existing images in a way that could make it the best AI image tool for professionals. To lure professional designers and editors, Google is also introducing several fine-tuning options in Banana, these options will let users define and manipulate aspects like resolution, lighting, camera angle, color-grading, focus, and even localized editing.
“Just a few months ago we released Nano Create, our Gemini 2.5 flash image model. From restoring old photos to creating miniature sculptures, Nano Create was a huge step forward in image editing that empowered casual creators to express their creativity,” a Google spokesperson said in a blog post. “Today, we are introducing Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image), our new cutting-edge image creation and editing model. Built on Gemini 3 Pro, Nano Banana Pro uses Gemini’s cutting-edge logic and real-world knowledge to visualize information better than ever before.”

One of the main features of Nano Banana Pro is its ability to understand text in images. According to Google, it can not only maintain the same text while manipulating images but it can also translate text into different languages. This type of ability will definitely help illustrators and designers.
Google states, “Nano Banana Pro is the best model for creating images with correctly rendered and legible text directly into the image, whether you’re looking for a short tagline or a long paragraph.”
Even though Google is aiming Create Pro at professional users, many of whom use MidJourney because of the creative control the app provides, the company says regular Nano Create will remain available.

Meanwhile, Banana Pro is launching today via the Google Gemini app. This will be available to all users if they select Gemini Thinking in the app and then choose Banana. If they choose Gemini Flash, they will get a banana non-pro version.
Given how powerful the new AI image tool is, Google is also bringing more robust AI image detection. The company will watermark all images manipulated or created with Nano Banana. This will be done in two ways. All images will have Google’s invisible SynthID built-in. It will be readable by Gemini AI. Google says, “You can now upload an image to the Gemini app and ask if it was generated by Google AI, thanks to SynthID technology.”
And two, the “sparkle” watermark will appear on all images created by free-tier and Gemini Pro users. But, Google says, “Recognizing the need for a clean visual canvas for professional work, we will remove visible watermarks from images generated by Google AI Ultra customers.”
