Global Virus Network New Covid-19 version issues guidance on vaccine protection

The new Covid-19 variant NB.1.8.1 is spreading early across India, Asia and America. A global virus monitoring body has confirmed that vaccines are effective against serious illness and hospitalization.

Global Virus Network (GVN) - an international alliance of top virgists and research centers - which is closely tracking the situation, says there is no current evidence that NB.1.8.1 causes a more serious disease than the first variant.

In short

  • NB.1.8.1 has been detected in 22 countries from January 2025
  • Kovid -19 cases active in India increased to 6,491 by 9 June
  • Hospital tour in Taiwan increased by 78% a week due to Kovid symptoms

NB.1.8.1, a newly identified Covid-19 version named, is spreading rapidly to parts of Asia, including other regions such as India and the United States.

While variants have expressed concern due to their increasing number, global health experts are cautious, not terror.

Global Virus Network (GVN) – an international alliance of top virgists and research centers – which is closely tracking the situation, says there is no current evidence that NB.1.8.1 causes a more serious disease than the first variant.

However, its increasing presence has inspired the World Health Organization (WHO) to list as ‘a version under monitoring’.

A version of a sub-dynasty of the Omikron family was found first in January 2025 and now found in 22 countries.

As of May 18, 2025, NB.1.8.1 is responsible for 10.7% of the Global Covid-19 virus presented for the International Database GISAID, global science initiatives and genomic data of virus, especially for the primary source for independent influenza viruses.

This is just a faster increase by just 2.5%. In India, active Covid-19 cases have climbed 6,491 (till 9 June) with more than 500 new infections in the last 24 hours.

State affairs like Delhi, Kerala, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are reporting continuous increase in affairs.

There is also an increase in other countries. In Taiwan, the hospital tour rose 78% in a week due to Covid-19 symptoms, with around 6,000 people demanding care between 27 April to 3 May.

In the United States, more than a dozen cases of NB.1.8.1 have been reported, initially it is detected through airport screening in California, Washington, Virginia and New York. Since then, this version has been found in Ohio, Road Island and Hawaii.

Despite the increase in infections, experts say that the patterns correspond to seasonal growth, and vaccines provide strong protection against serious illness.

What do we know about nb.1.8.1

NB.1.8.1 Shares several characteristics with the previous Omikron variants, including mutations in spike protein that helps the virus to spread more easily.

But initial studies suggest that it does not cause more serious illness or safety by vaccines or previous infections.

“Success may occur infections, especially among those who are unnatural or in those who are unnatural. But the vaccine remains highly effective in hospitalization and preventing death,” GVN said.

Current remedies such as Paxlovid (Meirmatrelvir/Ritonavir) and Remedicivers also continue to work well against this and other Omikron Subveriants.

Vaccination remains the key

In its latest guidelines, the alliance emphasized the importance of staying updated with covid-19 vaccination, especially with the development of virus.

Here are the updated vaccine recommendations of GVN:

Over 65 adults and people with underlying health issues should get an updated booster to suit the current variants.

All people aged 6 months and above are encouraged to stay on with vaccinations, especially before autumn and winter respiratory disease season.

If vaccination has not been done in the previous year, children and teenagers should receive age-appointed vaccine doses. It helps prevent complications such as hospitalization or MIS-C (a serious inflammatory situation in children).

Pregnant individuals are advised to be strongly vaccinated. According to GVN, studies suggest that Covid-19 vaccination during pregnancy reduces the risk of hospitalization in infants to 61% and helps to save the newborn for six months. It also reduces the risks of pre -birth and other complications.

Those who have not found the Covid-19 booster in the previous year should talk to their doctor about time and eligibility.

Cum-pasteurized covid-19 and flu vaccines are safe and recommended when needed. Side effects from both vaccines are rare.

There is no reason for alarm

Health Authorities are clear: The emergence of new variants like NB.1.8.1 is expected and this does not mean that we are entering a new emergency.

“This is not a reason to panic, but there is a moment to prepare,” GVN said. The ongoing vigilance, accurate public information and strong global cooperation are important.

GVN and who are encouraged to maintain timely virus tracking and share data to support the initial identity and response.

While nb.1.8.1, the equipment we have, they are vaccine, treatment and knowledge, are still effective.

What can you do

For the public, experts recommend to continue to follow good health practices:

  • Stay up -to -date with Kovid -19 vaccines.
  • If cases are increasing in your area, wear a mask in crowded indoor places.
  • Practice good hand hygiene.
  • If you feel ill, stay at home and test if symptoms appear.
  • If you are at high risk, consult your doctor about booster shots or antiviral treatment.

As the Covid-19 continues to develop, health agencies worldwide are transferring to long-term management from emergency response. This includes regular vaccination updates, such as with influenza, and clear communication to avoid misinformation and nervousness.

GVN said, “It will be important in navigating the Covid-19 scenario that develops continuous investment in scientific cooperation, accurate public communication, and means of prevention.”
