Glass design is not new, but will Apple be successful where Microsoft failed with Windows Vista
Microsoft tried to bring a glass -like beauty to the desktop with Windows Vista in 2007. Now, Apple is trying.
Listen to the story

In short
- Apple has announced liquid glass design for its equipment
- It is debuting with iOS 26, iPados 26, Macos Tahoe 26, and more
- Microsoft had a glass -like interface in Windows Vista
Apple says both unique and familiar at the same time, both unique and acquainted at the same time. This means that iOS 26, iPados 26, and Macos Tahoe 26, all of which have expanded radios, the way you use normally and interact day to day with your iPhone, iPad and MAC. The only difference is that, now, some of these interactions will be – more fun, magical and intuitive than per apple – per apple. It is as if Johnny Iv never left Apple Park, even though he has moved forward and is competing with Sam Altman’s AI company, OpenaiI, at the time of writing.
Say what you will do, but June 9, 2025, is a historic day for Apple. It has passed through this improvement cycle only twice since the morning of its existence. In 2013, the last such update came with iOS 7. Johnny played an important role in it. As is often in the case of marketing, this third Big Rivamp is also billed as a “comprehensive software design update” and is in many ways. It doesn’t have any message. And Apple is getting transparent (no punishment) about where some inspiration is coming from. It is inspired by Visionos that began on Vision Pro two years ago. But that is Apple Marketing Speak. The Internet knows better, and remember that the apple is not the first to do “Glasmorphism” in the Software. This is a recurring subject.
Most famous, Microsoft tried to bring a beauty like a glass to the desktop with Windows Vista in 2007. The update was also called “Aero Glass” to pronounce translucent window boundaries, contemplative surfaces, and micro animation, which was all designed from the ground to invoke the spirit of deep immersion. Some people may also say that it was ahead of its time, which was one of the biggest reasons why it failed frightening.

Aero Glass, while on every front was futuristic, a major resource hog. All fancy rendering demanded more than the system, especially on the graphics side, which meant that noticeable performance on older machines falls, especially with integrated graphics. Vista was not designed to feel slow and bloated – Microsoft would never do this, we believe – but it was widely considered as one – it is still today. Experience for a lack of a better word was, incompatible. Even shocks. (The things that made worse, it was that it came immediately after the Windows XP, one of the most successful products of Microsoft so far. No wonder it received a lot of heat from fans and critics equally.)
But everything was not a hardware-related issue. There were other problems. Although it was happy to see, the constant transported text would make it difficult to read against a tight background, reduce stress and productivity in your eyes. The lack of clear functional benefits on the form eventually ended its visual ability. In other words, Microsoft failed in execution.
Breaking glass roof
Things with Apple are different and while making a certain statement are still too early – good or bad – initial evidence suggests that liquid glass may not suffer from the same destiny. It may have its own challenges, of course, which we will definitely look deeply after spending some time with the update, but inappropriate hardware is not one of them.
Apple is aware of its strength with silicon and claimed that it will not be an issue running its new software on compatible equipment as “the new design takes advantage of the powerful advances of Apple in Hardware, Silicon and Graphics Technologies”, can only receive the apple “, the promising levels of liquidity” can only get apple. Modern apple tools are capable of providing sophisticated graphical effects without a significant performance hit. This allows the boundaries of visual design to carry forward the limits without compromising user experience, some cannot do with Microsoft Vista.
The implementation of Apple also seems more sophisticated and subtlely integrated, at least with promo content that is sharing it. Instead of making each element transparent, it is using a glass effect taken for specific UI components such as sidebar, toolbar and control center. It creates a feeling of depth without renouncing fragrance. The promo content also suggests that the spot applied to translucent elements effectively mutires the background, ensuring that the material remains readable without any hassle.
Apple is known to give a strong emphasis on purpose and clarity. Its new software design echoes this feeling through subtle but powerful visual signals that enhance logic and understanding rather than just existing for decorative purposes. For example, the effect of glass in a sidebar, subtle, surely suggests what is behind it, without distracting the primary material.
Finally, the expectations of the user have developed since 2007. We are now using a degree of visual polish more use for rich, animated interfaces – all because it is now possible. IOS 26, iPados 26, and Macos Tahoe 26 are available to download developer bets, while public stakes will come in July. We will get more hands between the same and September, which when Apple will roll these updates for one and all.
But regardless of how things go out-and what apple will be successful where Microsoft failed in large times-Licved glass is not one thing, but there is a big condition in the future. It is going to be in the heart of all apple devices until the next big comes together, which is never expected soon. Due to no new major updates on Apple Intelligence, Apple has once again chosen the old school software to raise all heavy for this. This is a tried and tested formula. Apple knows that it does well. The question is, how long can it tolerate to do so? Every day with Google and Openai (and Amazon and Meta), charting new frontiers every day, the world is moving in a completely different direction in a completely different direction and apple will have to hold Apple faster.
