Gautham Vasudev Menon, in a recent interview, expressed his disappointment towards Suriya for rejecting the opportunity to collaborate on Dhruva Natchathiram. Speaking in an interview with Behindwoods, the director revealed that the Kanguva actor should have trusted him, especially since they had already made two hit films together.
In his conversation the director said, “People may say that I am being eccentric, but it is not so. I understand that sometimes actors may not be able to answer spontaneously, but I think Suriya should not have even asked the question whether Dhruva should do Natchathiram or not. He should have agreed to do so.”
“We made Kaakha Kaakha and Vaaranam Aayiram that way. We had an idea and we went ahead with it. I met both Nana Patekar and Mohanlal for the role of father in the film, but they had their own reasons for saying no. Then Surya jumped into playing both the roles. He had the courage to do this,’ said the director.
Commenting further on the matter, Gautham Menon detailed how he and Suriya discussed the film several times. The director revealed that the actor was constantly asking him for “reference points” for the film, but the director had none, explaining that it was his own original idea.
GVM said, “I tried my best to convince them. If Surya had done this then it would have had a different style of action. I went inside, but he didn’t pick it up. He should have trusted me – his director who made films like Kaakha Kaakha and Vaaranam Aayiram with him. I didn’t even ask him to do it as a favor, just to trust me. What if it went wrong? He had nothing to lose—I’m the producer.”
The director further emphasized that no matter who else would have rejected the film, he was deeply saddened that Suriya rejected it.
The film Dhruva Nachathiram is an unreleased Tamil spy-action film starring Chiyaan Vikram in the lead role. The film, directed by GVM, has faced several delays due to financial and legal issues.
