House of the Dragon Season 2 finale aired last Sunday, August 4. It’ll be a long wait before the next season arrives, but fans have a new spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, to look forward to!
The show is set 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of Sir Duncan the Tall aka Dunk, a former squire who becomes a knight in his own right, and his new squire Egg, who is presumably connected to House Targaryen. There’s more than a century difference between the timeline of HOTD and the new spin-off, but the same names were featured in the cast announcement.
Edward Ashley will play Sir Steffon Fossoway, Youssef Kerkour will play Steely Pat, Sean Thomas will play Raymun Fossoway, Daniel Monks will play Sir Manfred Dondarrion, Danny Webb will play Sir Arlan of Penitentiary and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor will play Plummer, and Henry Ashton will play Daeron Targaryen.
Those who have watched the second season of the spin-off based on the Targaryen Civil War will recognise the dragon rider Daeron Targaryen, who is considered a key player in the Dance of the Dragons.
However, there is no confusion in the names and neither will Henry Ashton appear in HOTD Season 3. The confusion happened because the Targaryen family has had repeated names for several generations. Simply put, Daeron Targaryen in both the shows is two different characters who have no connection other than his name. The actor who will play Daeron in Season 3 is yet to be revealed.
Peter Claffey will play Dunk, a man who works for a hedge knight and takes over his business after his death. Dexter’s Soul Ancel will play his young squire Egg in the six-episode series, which is executive produced by Ira Parker and Martin, and directed by House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal.
According to Condal’s statement to Entertainment Weekly, the latest spin-off will focus on the woes of little people, especially in times of war. “Dunk & Egg is about little people who suffer because of the game of thrones played by the nobles,” Condal said.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on June 15, 2025.
