Fresh-faced Liam Payne first appeared on the British reality show The X Factor in 2008. He was 14 when he impressed the judges with his cover of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’. However, the judges told him that he was not ready yet and to try again later.

That’s exactly what Payne did. Two years later he auditioned for another classic ‘Cry Me a River’. This time the judges saw the X factor in him. He decided to form a band and put five boys, who were not successful individually, on the show. And thus the iconic One Direction was born.

Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson came together to form one of the most successful bands ever. They did not win The X Factor but were signed to judge Simon Cowell’s label. When their first single “What Makes You Beautiful” came out, the band’s rivals knew they needed to be careful.

The song became an instant hit and became number one on the British charts. It was his first of four UK chart-toppers in as many years. Stadiums filled with screaming teenage fans and record sales of millions soon became the norm.

Suddenly Liam is living his childhood dream, but at a heavy cost. The pressure on the band increased and tension arose. There was a lot going on backstage and as the band members have described – “It wasn’t easy being a teenager in the public eye”.

As a result, One Direction split up in 2016. A laid-back Liam, otherwise described as the “sensible one” in the group, turned to alcohol to cope. In the post-One Direction era, Liam decided to go solo and began releasing singles.

However, his solo career struggled to maintain momentum. His health also deteriorated physically and mentally. Liam was hospitalized twice in 2023 because his kidneys needed medical attention. He also spent time in rehab attempting to kick his alcohol addiction.

The singer’s social media posts show that he was attempting to get back on track.

Recently, just hours before he was found dead, Liam Payne shared a Snapchat video from his hotel room in which everything seemed to be fine.
