Pakistan’s Rawalpindi-based anti-terrorism court has asked the government and jail authorities to respond to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan’s request to meet his sons, Pakistani daily The Express Tribune reported on Wednesday.
The former prime minister filed a petition seeking permission to meet his sons Qasim and Suleman in Adiala jail.
In his petition, Mr Khan argued that it was his constitutional and legal right to meet his sons and stressed that the meeting would be of a family nature.
Mr Khan said, “I want to meet my sons Qasim and Suleman. This is my constitutional and legal right.”
The court has directed the government, Home Ministry and the jail administration to submit their replies by July 5. The hearing has been adjourned till July 7.
The former Pakistani prime minister was sentenced to 10 years in prison on January 30 for leaking government secrets. He is already serving a three-year jail term after being found guilty in a corruption case. Imran Khan called all the charges against him politically motivated.
In a statement released on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he urged the public to avenge every injustice by voting peacefully on February 8. He said, “Tell them that we are not sheep that can be driven with a stick.”
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, vice president of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and former foreign minister, was also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a special court constituted in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
The case relates to the alleged leak of secret diplomatic correspondence sent by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington to Islamabad when Khan was the prime minister.
This relates to his appearance at a rally in March 2022, a month before Khan was ousted from power through a no-confidence motion in parliament. He appeared on stage and waved a piece of paper that he says showed a foreign conspiracy against him.
