The former US Congresswoman, who will leave the Democratic Party in 2022, has announced her support for former President Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential elections in November, The Hill reports.
Gabbard, who has become a regular presence in conservative media, announced a gathering of the National Guard Association in Michigan, where Trump was also speaking.
“This administration has left us facing multiple wars on multiple fronts in regions around the globe, and we’ve moved closer to the brink of nuclear war than we’ve ever been,” Gabbard said.
“That is one of the key reasons I am committed to doing everything I can to return President Trump to the White House, where he can once again serve us as our Commander in Chief,” he said.
Notably, Gabbard ran an unsuccessful presidential campaign in the Democratic primaries in 2020. After ending her bid, she left Congress, left the Democratic Party and appeared at events such as the Conservative Political Action Conference, reports The Hill.
The former congressman has met with Trump in recent weeks to prepare for next month’s debate between Trump and Vice President Harris.
Perhaps the most notable moment of Gabbard’s failed 2020 White House bid was when she attacked Vice President Harris on the debate stage over her record as a prosecutor.
Gabbard’s endorsement comes days after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suspended his bid for the White House as an independent and endorsed Trump, which the former president’s campaign described as a significant development in battleground states.
The news comes days after the New York Times reported that Trump has enlisted Tulsi Gabbard to intensify his attacks against Kamala Harris in the debate.
According to the report, Gabbard joined Trump’s practice sessions at his private club and home, Mar-a-Lago. Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will face off in the ABC News debate on September 10.
In particular, Gabbard brings some key qualities to the role for Trump: she’s a woman, at a time when Trump is facing a woman as his general election opponent for the second time; she’s a former House member, giving her policy experience; and, perhaps most importantly for Trump, she’s been on a debate stage with Harris and launched a scathing attack on his record as a prosecutor, The New York Times reported.
