June 29, 2007, exceeds only one date – this is a significant twist in technical history. On this day, Apple introduced the iPhone, a touchscreen smartphone, which revolutionized the industry and fundamentally changed the way people connect and communicate. While the iPhone is near – or it seems – it has a positive impact on society, it has also brought unexpected downside. These are trading with any major technology innovation. Now one of its creators and designers, Sir Johnny Ewe, accept these unexpected results and feel responsible for them.
In an interview with BBC radio recently, Ive, which was a major force behind Apple’s most prestigious designs, shared insight into his career and how he worked with Steve Jobs. And during this conversation he touched the subject of unexpected results of the construction of the iPhone. In the conversation, Ive said that when he celebrated the ability of iPhone to empower and connect people, he also accepted “not positive results” such as the erosion of smartphone and erosion of privacy.
He said, “Just because there were no not-so-positive results, no matter how I feel responsible,” he said.
Ive revealed that even after leaving Apple in 2019, the iPhone had a widespread impact with him. He explained that the device continued to impress its design options as it tries to balance its powerful characteristics with the need for discipline. “When you can connect with people, at home or when you are traveling, it is very powerful alone,” he said. “You need a strong feeling of discipline to use it in to use it at all times.”
He said that this conflict between connected and managing screen time has become an important focus in his work.
Meanwhile, talking about his work in Apple, Ive also touched his close relationship with Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs. He started working with jobs in 1997 when Jobs returned to the company. IVE recalled that he felt “very frightened” at first, but quickly created a deep connection with jobs. “Despite the limitations in my ability to communicate, Steve understood what I thought and how I felt,” he said. “My heavy feeling was extraordinary gratitude.”
IVE revealed that during the time, Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy, and felt “irrelevant and completely useless”. However, with the return of jobs, the company reached a turn. Within the days of the meeting, the two began working on IMAC, which revived the fate of Apple.
IVE described the IMAC’s design process as a creative tornado, which took just two to three weeks to complete. He revealed that the transported color and specific handles of IMAC were his deliberate options to make the product acceptable and attractive. “We added transit colors so that consumers would talk about it instead of MHz and Glasses,” IVE explained. “The design just felt alive.”
