Maggie Smith, widely known for her role in the Harry Potter film franchise, passed away on September 27, leaving behind a legacy of great acting skills. One of the film projects where she showcased her skills in the best way was The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

For those who don’t know, this film also won the British actress her first Oscar. Talking about the film project, it is a 1969 drama film.

The feature was directed by Ronald Neame, with the screenplay by J. Pearson Allen. Smith played the lead role of Jean Brody, a schoolteacher named Marcia Blaine. The story takes place in the 1930s, with the school being in Edinburgh.

Smith’s character in this film was that of a somewhat open-minded teacher who generally went beyond the school curriculum and romanticized fascist leaders such as Benito Mussolini and Francisco Franco.

In this film, Maggie Smith’s role also focuses on girls who are moldable, ultimately placing them in her “Brody set”. This “Brody Set” features the teacher with four 12-year-old junior school girls named Jenny, Sandy and Monica, as well as Mary.

While Maggie Smith’s Brodie and her Brodie set are often shown enjoying their time in art museums as well as the theater and having picnics on the school lawn, they attract the attention of the school’s headmistress, Emmaline Mackay.

Mackie is a character who holds a grudge against Brody, while on the other hand, the film also features Gordon Lowther, a music teacher and choir leader who supports Brody and his views on the world.

Lothar was played by Gordon Jackson, while Mackie was played by Celia Johnson.

The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Song – Original for Picture, Jean, Music and Lyrics by Rod McKuen, as well as for Best Actress Maggie Smith, while only the latter won.

According to The Guardian, the sad news of Maggie Smith’s death was first announced by her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.

“He passed away peacefully in hospital this morning, Friday, September 27,” their statement said.

Many actors like Michael Caine, Whoopi Goldberg, Hugh Bonneville and Daniel Radcliffe paid tribute to the legendary actress.

Meanwhile, a tribute from King Charles and Queen Camilla said, “As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering his many great performances with heartfelt admiration and affection.” We do.”
