Subsequently, the mayors of Miami-Dade, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale also declared states of emergency, resulting in the closure of public schools, courts, and even Dania Beach City Hall.

Railroads in and around Miami were closed, while several southern Florida cities were flooded after more than 20 inches of rain fell.

While northern Miami recorded the most rainfall at more than 500 mm, a storm that hit Sarasota on Tuesday evening dropped about 100 mm of rain in just one hour, a record for that area, according to CBS News senior meteorologist David Parkinson.

South Florida flooding: Key points

  • Additional rain could lead to flooding in various parts of Florida. However, experts said on Friday that the continuous storms, which brought up to 20 inches of rain to the southern part of Florida, now appear to be ending. Officials said that some areas of Miami and Fort Lauderdale are still flooded, although it is receding rapidly.

  • The National Weather Service forecasts that the threat of heavy rain is expected to gradually decrease over the next few days. However, forecasters warn that persistent rain is likely to cause problems.

  • This unnamed storm system moved from Florida into the Gulf of Mexico at about the same time hurricane season was getting underway in early June. According to forecasters, this is one of the most active storms in recent times, as there are concerns that climate change is increasing the intensity of hurricanes.

  • Briefing the media, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said additional rain is expected in the state. “Hopefully it won’t reach the levels it has reached before, but we have a lot of resources here, and we’ll be able to offer statewide assistance,” he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

  • Amid fears of flooding, the T20 World Cup 2024 match between India and Canada on Saturday was expected to be affected. The wet patches on the ground could not be cleared till Friday afternoon due to the rains that have been lashing Florida for the past few days.
