What is adrenal fatigue? How to detect it? What are its symptoms?

According to WebMD, adrenal fatigue is a term coined in 1998 by James Wilson, a naturopathic doctor and alternative medicine specialist. He describes it as a condition in which the adrenal glands function below the required level, usually due to acute stress and chronic health problems. This prolonged stress burns out the adrenal glands from excessive cortisol production, resulting in adrenal fatigue.

The Endocrine Society states that prolonged stress can affect the adrenal glands, causing imbalances in the body. However, there is no test to directly detect adrenal fatigue. It is usually identified based on symptoms such as:

  • Tiredness
  • Inadequate sleep
  • increased cravings for salt, sugar, or caffeine

How to treat adrenal fatigue and detox your adrenal glands:

Prolonged stress requires proper detoxification to flush out toxins accumulated in the body and regulate the flow of blood and oxygen in the body. This helps reduce oxidative stress and support cortisol production. Proper nutritional supplementation with vitamins B5, B6, B12, C, and magnesium is essential, reports WebMD.

Keeping this in mind, nutritionist Shikha Gupta has curated a healthy mix that will provide you with electrolytes and essential vitamins for proper detoxification.

Electrolyte Drink for Adrenal Fatigue: How to Make It:

Shikha Gupta explains that this simple drink provides essential minerals and vitamins like vitamin C, which are often depleted when one is stressed. Here’s how to make it:

1. Take 100-150 ml of water or coconut water.
2. Add juice of half lemon or 100 ml orange juice to it.
3. Add a quarter teaspoon of cream of tartar to it. You can also add lemon juice or apple cider vinegar instead.
4. Add 1/4 teaspoon sea salt.
5. Mix all these in a glass and drink it once a day, early morning or mid-morning.
