Veteran actress Farida Jalal recently worked in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, where she received immense praise for her role, reaffirming her reputation as one of the finest actresses of her time. Recently, Jalal expressed her desire to play more challenging roles than those offered to her male counterparts.
Faria Jalal happy to be getting more challenging roles
Speaking to Times of India, the Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge actress expressed her desire for a challenging role that would allow her to showcase her versatility. She said she is happy to see the return of senior actors and hopes filmmakers will give them different roles from what they have played in recent years.
She stated that she was “looking forward to a challenging role” that would give her the opportunity to showcase her abilities, rather than being stuck in stereotyped roles, such as a mother or grandmother.
Farida expressed disappointment that the producers felt she was only capable of these roles and wished for more exciting opportunities. She said, “I think let’s bring another mother’s role, and a grandmother’s role for me. All that. I’m disappointed that the producers don’t think I can do more than this. I want to do something exciting”.
He compared her situation to that of her male counterparts, “like the late Amrish Puri and Anupam Kher, who got a chance to play a variety of characters, including villain and comedian, instead of being restricted to typical roles such as father or grandfather.”
The actress expressed satisfaction with the roles she has been offered so far and said she is making the most of her opportunities. Though she admitted she aspires to play more significant roles, she stressed on enjoying acting and wanting to show her full potential.

Jalal, who appeared in Saif Ali Khan’s Jawaani Jaaneman in 2020 and Ittu Si Baat in 2022, was recently seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series, Heeramandi.
Discussing her upcoming projects, she revealed that she has completed several projects including Dua Qubool and the debut film of late composer Aadesh Shrivastava’s son. Expressing her love for her work, Jalal said that she will continue working indefinitely.
