Famous poet, filmmaker and writer Pritish Nandy passed away on Wednesday, January 8. He was 73 years old. His son Kushan Nandy confirmed the news to India Today.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher paid tribute to his friend on social media. On Instagram, Kher shared an emotional message, remembering Nandy not only for his creative talent but also for his personal qualities.

“Deeply saddened and shocked to learn about the passing of #PritishNandi, one of my dearest and closest friends! Amazing poet, writer, filmmaker and a brave and unique editor/journalist!” Kher wrote, reflecting on the deep bond they shared during the early days of their careers.

“He was my support system and a huge source of strength during my early days in Mumbai. We shared many things. He was one of the most fearless people I have met. Always larger than life,” the actor added.

Kher, who had a long-standing relationship with Nandy, recalled several lessons he learned from the late icon. He also reflected on a special gesture of Nandi, remembering how he once surprised him by putting him on the cover of filmfare magazine and The Illustrated WeeklyKher’s tribute portrayed Nandy not only as a creative genius but also as a loyal friend who embodied the essence of a ‘true friend’.friend of friends,

At the end of the post, Kher expressed his deep sorrow at losing a friend and mentor. “I will never forget when he surprised me by having me on the cover of Filmfare, and more importantly, on the cover of #TheIllustratedWeekly. He was the true definition of yaaron ka yaar! I love you and the moments we spent together. Will miss you my friend. #heartbroken,” Kher wrote.

Writer and actor Suhail Seth paid last tribute to Pritish Nandy and remembered his ‘harmless Twitter banter’. Seth wrote on

Pritish Nandy was a versatile personality and a prominent figure in Indian media and culture. He has made significant contributions as a journalist, poet, filmmaker and former Rajya Sabha member.

As a journalist, Nandy served as publishing director of The Times of India and editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India. Nandi’s literary contribution is equally noteworthy. He is a renowned poet with several acclaimed collections to his credit.

Beyond his journalistic and literary activities, Nandy has also made his mark as a filmmaker. He founded a production house called Pritish Nandy Communications, which has produced many critically acclaimed and commercially successful films like Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Mirabai Not Out, Ugly Aur Pagli, Shaadi Ke Side Effects and Jhankaar Beats.

In addition, Nandy also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, and was a vocal advocate for animal rights, co-founding People for Animals, an animal welfare organization.
