Excerpts from the interview:

I loved how one can never be sure who or what her character, Da-hee, is. She seems like a naïve girl, but at the same time, sharp as a knife. Tell me what are some of the difficulties one might face playing such a flawed character? Also, how did you overcome them?

Portraying a multi-layered character may seem complicated, but it is also fascinating, interesting and worth a lot of challenges. Rather than being difficult, the script and direction expressed so much of the character’s past that I just had to really feel her presence and emotions as the character. This is probably the most challenging part, but there is nothing better than honesty and authenticity when it comes to portraying a character.

Can you share any personal insights or experiences that influenced your portrayal of the character in the series?

I was physically and mentally exhausted before the shoot, but during the long shoot I had more energy than before, not less. On set, I always got energy from my co-actors and the communication with the director also helped. I believe this must have reflected through my acting.

One thing that is important in this story is the relationship with co-stars. How did you build rapport with your co-stars?

Thankfully, all the actors involved in ‘The Atypical Family’ are warm and caring people, and it was the director’s idea that brought us together. Whenever we were shooting a scene together, I was happy because sharing thoughts and encouraging each other created a good atmosphere.

‘The Atypical Family’ addresses social norms and challenges traditional family structures. What message do you hope the audience takes away from your character’s story?

Sometimes, we forget about the people close to us, especially our family. The play says that only through love and communication with each other can we bring out our true identity and potential.

This series features people who have superpowers. If you had a superpower in real life, what would you want and why?

I want the superpower of teleportation, i.e. the ability to travel anywhere and anytime.

As a star in the Korean entertainment industry, what are your aspirations or goals for your future career? Do you see yourself working in any Hindi/Indian cinema as well?

I am always open to international work. If there is a good project, I would love to work on it. I want to explore Indian culture in depth because Indian cinema and food are very fascinating and amazing.
