Acclaimed singer Shilpa Rao opens up about her approach to maintaining versatility in her music and shares insights on her recent collaboration with Anirudh Ravichander.
The Besharam Rang singer, in an exclusive interview with India Today Digital, stressed the importance of balancing diversity while staying true to her unique sound.
When Rao was asked about his method of adapting to different musical styles, he highlighted his commitment towards exploring different languages and styles. “To be versatile as well as stay true to your style, it is important to listen to different genres, artists and productions. Exploring different languages and music helps you adapt to different styles successfully,” she explained.
Rao recently collaborated with renowned composer Anirudh Ravichander for the song Chuttamalle in Devara. Describing the experience as both “challenging and fun”, he noted the intense but enjoyable atmosphere he brought to the project. “Anirudh has a lot of energy, and it felt like a jam session. I really enjoyed working with him,” said Rao, outlining how his innovative sound pushed him creatively.

Reflecting on his career, Rao explains how collaborations with various composers have influenced his growth. He shared, “You learn a lot of music from different musicians, but more importantly, you learn how to become a better artist, which is a big lesson.”
As she continues to grow, Rao remains dedicated to creative development, crediting her daily routine of rest, experimentation, and continuous learning for her success. “That’s how you keep moving forward in your work; There is no other path to progress,” she concluded. Looking ahead, he expressed excitement about the future of Indian music and the endless possibilities it holds.
Shilpa Rao recently lent her voice to the Do Patti soundtrack Akhiyan De Khol, filmed on Kriti Sanon. The film released on Netflix on October 25 and also stars Kajol and Shaheer Sheikh.
