Ram Gopal Varma and Amitabh Bachchan have great on-screen chemistry. The director has always tried to explore a different side of Big B and has experimented with him on many projects. Nishabd was also one of such experiments. In an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla, Ram Gopal Varma admitted that the story of Nishabd was not in line with Amitabh Bachchan’s image, which led to the controversy.
Describing an intimate scene of Amitabh Bachchan with late actor Jiah Khan, RGV said that Nishabd was controversial for its time. “It’s that scene from Nishabd where this estranged man falls in love with a much younger girl. It was controversial for its time, especially because of Mr Bachchan’s image. Obviously, they couldn’t afford it.”
Furthermore, the filmmaker revealed that Nishabd is one of his most sensitive films. Varma said, “But I would like to believe that this is one of the most sensitive films I have made and perhaps one of Mr. Bachchan’s best performances.”

Ram Gopal Varma admitted his mistake in casting Amitabh Bachchan in such a role, saying, “Yes, it was a mistake to think that his image would not go into that kind of story.”
Let us tell you, Nishabd was released in 2007. This film took inspiration from the Hollywood film American Beauty and the Indian film Anokha Rishta. Apart from Amitabh Bachchan and Jiah Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Revati, Shraddha Arya, Rukhsar and others were also in important roles in the film. The story of Nishabd revolves around a 60-year-old family man, a photographer. Things took a turn when the photographer, while capturing hot and bold pictures of his daughter, became infatuated with her 18 year old friend.
Although the film received praise for its performances, it was criticized due to its controversial plot and subject matter. It flopped badly at the box office.
