Exclusive: Christian Bale couldn’t forget Maggie Gyllenhaal’s fiery, eccentric The Bride script ‘really sticks with me’

Date:

The world of Frankenstein is intriguing and challenging, this time from none other than Maggie Gyllenhaal, the Academy Award-nominated writer and director of The Lost Daughter. And while the story itself may be one that many have tried to champion, it is being talked about for its bold effort and star-studded cast. The lead roles are Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale as The Bride, Ida and Frank respectively. The characters were first introduced to the world in 1818 and since then they have evolved into these intense entities on screen, so much so that their impact is immeasurable.

Christian Bale shares his admiration for Maggie Gyllenhaal and the creators of The Bride

In an exclusive note to Pinkvilla, the Oscar winner herself shared her thoughts about being handed the script and how she felt stepping into Frank’s shoes. Upon his first meeting with the deeply intellectual character, now re-imagined through the world of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Christian Bale recalls being ‘completely amazed’.

Additionally, the actor shared that seeing Frank’s magic was an experience in itself, “Loved the script. It was really original. A great radical punk rock take on it. It made me think of Rage Against the Machine’s Killing in the Name-"“I won’t do whatever you say.” And it was exciting. I couldn’t put it down. Hats off to the people who were willing to make a big difference with this, and that was Warner Bros..”

Sharing how she approached the role and began to see herself in it, the 52-year-old revealed, “But the test for me is always, ‘Can I ignore something? Can I forget about it? Can I throw it away?’ And that really stuck with me. It had very wild, electric moments throughout. I couldn’t forget about it."

Apart from the two lead actors, the film stars Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal and Penelope Cruz. However, a production like this is nothing without its team, which also includes a celebrity crew to entertain. These include director of photography Lawrence Sher, production designer Karen Murphy, editor Dylan Tichenor, music supervisor Randall Poster, composer Hildur Gudnadóttir, and costume designer Sandy Powell.

about the bride’s story

The film is based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, and follows the infamous Frankenstein’s monster, Frank (Christian Bale), as she goes back to Dr. Euphronius and asks him for a partner. Due to his loneliness, this highly emotional monster needs a companion, and he makes one with the Doctor. They breathe life into a murdered woman, giving birth to The Bride (Jessie Buckley). The two then set out on an unimaginable path of destruction and chaos, but their love transcends it all.

American Gothic romance film The Bride is all set to release in theaters globally on March 6, 2026.
