Abhijeet Bhattacharya is known for giving Hindi music lovers some of the most memorable romantic tracks. From Chaand Taare to Tum Dil Ki Dhadak, his songs still have the same magical effect as they did years ago.
However, it’s been a while since we heard him sing for a Bollywood film. Recently, during an exclusive podcast with Pinkvilla, the melodious singer opened up about the politics in the music industry, due to which he is often not allowed to work of late.
Abhijeet Bhattacharya on not getting proper opportunity to sing in films in the last few years
During a candid chat with Pinkvilla, when Abhijeet Bhattacharya was asked if he has ever been criticised in a way that made him feel humiliated but also inspired, the singer recalled being a victim of industry politics. “Mere saath bahut hua hai… jisne hota tha ki, music director ko jaise hi laga ke Shah Rukh Khan ki picture mil gayi… kitne bhi close ho mere woh music director, aisa lagta thi si uska motive hi tha ke Abhijeet,” he said. “Aisa mere saath bahut hua hai. When music directors used to get Shah Rukh Khan’s film, they would not give me a chance to sing, no matter how close I was to him.”
Explaining his point further, the singer said, “When I got the award, and no film was a huge blockbuster yes boss, the song was also not a blockbuster, but at that time there was a non-blockbuster in the middle of all the blockbusters, Border, Pardes, Dil To Pagal Hai. And here I got it. Anyone could have got it, it’s not like I had to get it… Worthy of praise. And how many music directors felt that…Usse baad dikha dikha ke mujhe vo bolte hain ke gaana tumse nahi gawane.” When I won the award, it could have been given to anyone. After that, many music directors openly told me that they will not give their song to me.
He said that the music directors will feel that they have created the song and they are its owners. “You are a goldsmith. You will get diamonds, silver, you will get gold. You are a goldsmith, you can make the design, you are not the diamond, you are not the gold, you are not the silver, you are the diamond yourself. You are a goldsmith, you will get diamonds, gold, silver. But you are not the diamond, gold, silver or iron. You will have to design it yourself.” He said that those music directors are still close to him.
