Elon Musk says there will be no phones in the future, only Neuralinks will exist
Elon Musk says there will be no phones in the future and only Neuralink. The billionaire’s company recently shared progress on the success of its first human trial.
In January this year, Elon Musk’s Neuralink had shared that it has successfully implanted its brain chip in a human for the first time. The recipient of this brain chip is a 29-year-old man who was paralyzed below his shoulders after an accident. The man named Noland Arbaugh received the brain chip on January 28 and was reported to be improving two days after the surgery. On completion of 100 days of Arbaugh’s surgery, Neuralink had also shared a detailed report about his progress in a blog post. Musk had shared the patient’s recovery as well as progress in various tweets. And now, the head of Neuralink says that the future will have no phones but will be dominated by Neuralink users.
Replying to a parody account of himself on X, Musk wrote, “In the future, there will be no phones, only Neuralinks.” The account to which Musk replied shared a picture of Musk holding a phone in his hand. The picture shows a neural network-like design on Musk’s forehead and it appears to have been created using AI.
The user wrote alongside the photo, “Would you install a Neuralink interface in your brain so you could control your new X phone by thinking?”
Meanwhile, Neuralink is looking for a second participant who wants to receive a brain chip to control computers as well as phones with their mind.
Musk had earlier tweeted, “Neuralink is accepting applications for a second participant. This is our telepathy cybernetic brain implant that allows you to control your phone and computer just by thinking. There is no one better than Noland (@ModdedQuad) to tell you about the first one.” Neuralink also shared a video of their first patient on X and mentioned in the caption that they are looking for participants for their clinical trials.
“It takes pioneers to redefine the limits of human potential. If you suffer from quadriplegic disorder and want to discover new ways to control your computer, we invite you to participate in our clinical trial,” the company tweeted.
In March this year, Neuralink’s official handle live-streamed a video showcasing the progress of its first patient. The video showed a Neuralink engineer introducing the company’s first human test patient, Noland Arbaugh. The 29-year-old revealed in the video that he was paralyzed below the shoulders after an accident that happened around 8 years ago. Arbaugh then added that Neuralink has enabled him to play chess, which he loves a lot but was unable to play himself until now.
Talking about how he felt after receiving the Neuralink chip and being able to play chess by just thinking, he had said, “It’s crazy, it’s great. I’m lucky to be a part of this. It’s like I’m learning something new every day. I can’t describe how great it is to be able to do this.”
He then explained how Neuralink has enabled him to “play to my heart’s desire” as he doesn’t have to rely on anyone. “I could only play through the iPad and I couldn’t play without my parents’ help. I couldn’t keep them up all night (to help me play). I could only play for a few hours. Playing a full game wasn’t possible. And now I can just lie in bed and play to my heart’s desire. The biggest hurdle was waiting for the implant to charge but it’s been great,” he said at the time.
