US technology billionaire Elon Musk on Friday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his historic electoral victory and said he is looking forward to his companies doing “exciting things” in India.

Mr Modi will be sworn in as Prime Minister on June 9, which will be his third consecutive term as Prime Minister.

“Congratulations @narendramodi on your victory in the world’s largest democratic election! Excited about the exciting work my companies will do in India,” Mr Musk said in a post on X.

The congratulatory message comes two months after the CEO of electric carmaker Tesla and microblogging platform X postponed his proposed visit to India in April due to “very heavy Tesla obligations”.

Mr Musk – who was expected to be in India on April 21 and 22 and was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Modi – later wrote on X that he was looking forward to visiting India later this year.

In June last year, Mr Musk had met Mr Modi during his visit to the US and said he was planning to visit India in 2024, expressing confidence that Tesla would enter the Indian market soon.

His proposed visit had raised expectations that he would announce plans to set up electric carmaker Tesla as well as his satcom venture Starlink in the country.

It was also expected that Mr Musk would announce Tesla’s plans to set up its manufacturing unit in India which could lead to an investment of billions of dollars and also pave the way for selling Tesla electric cars in India at the earliest.

Not just electric cars, it is also eyeing the Indian market for its satellite internet business Starlink, which is awaiting regulatory approval.

Mr Musk has in the past sought a reduction in import duty for selling Tesla cars in India.

Mr Musk’s plan to visit India in April comes soon after the government announced a new electric vehicle policy under which import duty concessions will be given to companies setting up manufacturing units in the country with a minimum investment of $500 million, a move aimed at attracting major global companies like Tesla.
