Elon Musk changes AGI timeline again, now says XAI could reach 2026
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has reportedly changed the timeline for XAI to reach artificial general intelligence (AGI). Now, Musk believes that his company’s AI models could surpass human intelligence by next year.
Elon Musk is seen as one of the leading figures in the world of artificial intelligence (AI). They introduced xAI in 2023. Since then, the firm has made rapid progress with AI, but the goal of artificial general intelligence (AGI) – a state where AI can think and reason like humans – has yet to be achieved. Now, Musk has reportedly given a new timeline for when XAI could finally reach AGI.
When will Elon Musk’s xAI reach AGI?
According to Business Insider, Elon Musk revealed his adjusted timeline for achieving AGI during an all-hands meeting at XAI’s San Francisco headquarters. The report said Musk is confident that his company can reach this milestone within two years or as early as 2026. Earlier, the tech billionaire had hinted that the Grok 5 AI model had a 10 percent chance of reaching AGI. The Grok 5 model is expected to be released in early 2026.
While Elon Musk has mentioned that xAI could soon reach AGI, he underlined that it will take a lot of work behind the scenes. The report also states that Musk believes that AGI in xAI can surpass human intelligence and make his company the most powerful AI company.
Elon Musk claims xAI can defeat its rivals
The tech billionaire claimed that the next few years will be crucial for xAI. He reportedly said that if the company can survive and progress in this period, xAI can easily overtake its competitors. xAI is competing with tech giants like Google, OpenAI and Meta in the AI race.
According to the report, Musk acknowledged that rapid growth in data center capacity and stronger access to funding will be necessary to maintain the lead. Elon Musk reportedly told employees that XAI would have an advantage over other AI companies because it could access funding of about $20 billion to $30 billion per year, and benefit from proximity to their other companies. Tesla integrated Grok into its vehicles earlier this year.
This funding will be essential to expand the capabilities of xAI. During the meeting, Musk announced plans to increase the number of GPUs in the company from 200,000 to more than one million. Elon Musk’s comments reportedly received a positive reception from xAI activists.
