Dutch police use holograms to solve 2009 murder of Amsterdam sex worker

Netherlands police are using an innovative life-size hologram of a sex worker murdered in Amsterdam in February 2009 in a bid to uncover new information about the case and bring her killer or killers to justice. The hologram is placed behind a window in the red light district of Amsterdam. Sitting on a stool he watches people passing by and appears to be knocking on the window. The glass fogs up while the word “Help” appears on it, CNN reports.

The hologram is modeled on Bernadette Szabo, better known as Betty, who was murdered in the Dutch capital in 2009. Created using 3D visualization technology, it also features a large dragon tattoo covering Betty’s stomach and chest.

A house in the area has been dedicated entirely to Betty’s murder, with large stickers on the windows and TV screens showing the crime scene, a documentary, and images of the woman.

This holographic is designed to reach out to people who may have information about a murder case but were not present at the time of the incident.

In the official statement, Benjamin Van Gogh, coordinator of the Amsterdam Wanted and Missing Persons Team, said that “it is difficult to determine what, in this case, would have required for potential witnesses to share their information with us”.

“The hologram of the daughter can create a certain bond with her and thus convince a person to come forward. “In this type of case, we always try to put the face of the victim so informants know who they’re doing it for, and the hologram is a way to take it a step further,” CNN quoted the officer as saying. quoted as saying.

In a statement, Dutch police said Szabo was born and raised in poverty in the Hungarian town of Nyirégyháza before relocating to Amsterdam at the age of 18. After arriving in the city, she started earning money as a sex worker. red light district. After becoming pregnant, she continued to work throughout her pregnancy and later gave birth to a son in November 2008. The child was later placed with a foster family.

Betty was found dead on the night of February 19, 2009, when two of her fellow sex workers arrived at her workplace in Oudezides Achterbergwal. They realized that they did not see her or hear the music she usually played. At around 1 am, they found that his body had been stabbed dozens of times. As The Guardian reports, she was 19 years old.

For the past 15 years, the police investigated the case extensively, monitoring CCTV and interviewing witnesses. The matter remained unresolved.

The reward for any information related to the case has been increased to €30,000 (about $32,160).
