Trigger warning: This article contains references to suicide
Deion Sanders, who has always been in the spotlight, first as a baseball player and now as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, is also having a tough time. Recalling the dark phase of his life, Sanders recently opened up about his suicide attempt.
The discussion came to a head when multi-Grammy Award winning singer Kirk Franklin appeared on Dion and Roxie Diaz’s talk show, We Got Time Today.
As Franklin talked about his life and current pop culture, Dion revealed that it was Kirk Franklin’s music that saved his life.
Saying that the world needed Kirk Franklin, the head coach noted that “a lot of people in the church didn’t tell me the truth,” which made him think everyone was perfect and innocent.
He then explained that when he heard Kirk Franklin’s music, he found himself.
Talking about his suicide attempt, Franklin said that he was driving his car off the highway and was about to commit suicide.
However, this was also when he was listening to the Conquerors, adding, “It was like double-mindedness at its best.”
Dion then mentioned that “God kept him alive” when he drove his car off the highway, also saying that it was Franklin’s music that encouraged him to get back on his feet.
In 1997, Dion attempted to drive his Mercedes off a cliff after a baseball game for the Cincinnati Reds. For those unaware, the rock had fallen approximately 30 to 40 feet.
Fortunately, the player was not injured. The star player was in a bad phase in his life after going through his first divorce and was also facing the possibility of losing his children.
