The administration of President Donald Trump appeared to run an order back on Tuesday, asking for mass firing of federal workers who are still serving their probationary period.
Following the update guidance, a federal judge in California ruled that the instructions from the Personnel Management Office (OPM) on January 20 were “illegal” and ordered it to be temporarily canceled.
The OPM’s updated guidance said on Tuesday, “Please note that by this memorandum, OPM agencies are not directing any specific demonstration-based action about the probationary employees. The agencies have the right to take a final decision, and have the responsibility for the works of such personnel,” OPM’s updated guidance said on Tuesday.
The memorandum states that the agencies now have to prepare their own proposals to implement the deduction of the workforce by 13 September.
Responding to the case brought by employees in six government agencies, Judge Willy Judge William Alsup on Thursday ruled that “illegal, invalid, and should be stopped and can be canceled.” The next hearing in the case is scheduled for March 13.
“OPM amendment on January 20 is a clear entry on January 20 that it has illegally directed the federal agencies to complete the collective termination of probationary employees,” the American Federation of Government National President Aleret Kelly said in a statement to AFP.
He said, “Every agency should immediately cancel these illegal termination and restore all those who were illegally removed.”
Thousands of employees are still in their probationary period-which means that they were hired or promoted within the last one to two years, on the basis of the agency, it has since been rejected as part of the effort by the so-called department of government’s efficiency, headed to reduce the federal workforce under the leadership of billionaire Elon Musk.
It is not clear what will happen next.
“It can’t wait to see if it means we can go back to work!” A scientist of the National Ocean and atmospheric administration told AFP. Scientists were one of the 700 people from the famous agency globally last week.
Many of the rejected people were told that despite receiving exemplary performance reviews, they were being allowed to go due to perceived inability to fulfill their duties.
Scientists, who had requested oblivion, said that even though the employees were only temporarily rearranged for the end of later through a traditional “force” process – they would receive the least more protection, including advanced information and dissected salary.
