In his “Person of the Year” interview published in Time magazine, President-elect Donald Trump called Ukraine’s use of US missiles on Russian territory “madness”. He also said he “strongly” disagreed with it, suggesting that United States policy toward the war between Russia and Ukraine could change dramatically.
“This is madness what’s happening. It’s madness. I completely disagree with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia. Why are we doing this? We’re just escalating this war and making it worse. This should not have been allowed to happen,” she said.
This comes as outgoing President Joe Biden has given Ukraine the green light to use Russian long-range missiles. However, the move was in response to Russia deploying 15,000 North Korean troops on the battlefield.
Although Trump was critical of Biden’s decision, he said he would “not give up” on Ukraine. “I want to reach an agreement and the only way to reach an agreement is not to abandon him,” he said.
He said he wants a quick resolution to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and that he has a “very good plan” but does not want to share it. He said, “I think I have a pretty good plan to help me, but when I start unraveling that plan, it turns out to be an almost useless plan.”
Despite this, there are concerns in Ukraine that the “plan” to wind things down quickly may be largely on Moscow’s terms.
He said the loss of life in the conflict is “shocking” and commented, “I’m talking to both sides. It’s really beneficial for both sides to make this work.”
Since the early weeks of the conflict, Russia has moved forward faster and more violently than ever before.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for stronger global action than sanctions on Russia after it launched 93 missiles and 200 drones at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
“Another Russian missile attack against Ukraine. Cruise missiles, ballistic missiles. According to preliminary reports, 93 missiles were launched, including at least one North Korean missile. A total of 81 missiles were shot down, of which 11 Cruise missiles were intercepted by us “In addition, the Russians used about 200 drones in this attack,” Zelensky wrote on X.
When Trump was asked if he had recently spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said, “I can’t tell you. I can’t tell you. That’s absolutely inappropriate.”
