On July 17, 2024, people around the world will be celebrating the 89th birthday of one of global cinema’s most celebrated actors, Donald Sutherland. In an acting career spanning over 60 years, Sutherland appeared in films such as MAS*H, Don’t Look Now and The Hunger Games series.

The legendary actor passed away unfortunately at the age of 88. Let’s find out about Donald Sutherland’s early life on his 89th birthday.

A Canadian beginning

Sutherland was born on July 17, 1935, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He grew up in a middle-class family, born to Dorothy Isobel and Frederick McLay Sutherland, who worked as a salesman. The Sutherland family traveled extensively in his early years for Donald’s father’s job and eventually settled in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. This maritime environment, with its rich cultural heritage, played an important role in shaping young Donald’s life and approach to art.

Teething struggles and health issues

Sutherland suffered health problems throughout his childhood and youth. As a child he suffered from poliomyelitis, which kept him bedridden for several months. In addition, he suffered from rheumatic fever. Some of these illnesses affected his physical health, while others affected his mental toughness and perseverance. Overcoming these illnesses required great strength and determination; these are aspects that would later make Sutherland known as an actor.

Academic interests and development of interest in acting

Sutherland had many illnesses since childhood, but he did well in studies. His acting career began in high school at Bridgewater High School, where he discovered his passion for acting. However, his initial interest was in engineering. Sutherland enrolled at the University of Toronto, where he initially enrolled in engineering as well as drama, which shows that he was a person with many talents and interests.

All of this happened before he joined the university, but it was during his university studies that his passion for acting blossomed. He became very involved in the activities of Hart House Theatre, a theatre group of university students.

His performances there were well received and he soon concluded that he enjoyed acting more than engineering. And this eventually led Sutherland to make a bold decision and pursue art as his main line of activity.

Further education and early career

Sutherland studied at the University of Toronto and after completing his studies, he stayed there to further hone his skills. He also benefited from acting training at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in the United Kingdom. These years of hard training and rehearsals played a decisive role in the formation of Sutherland’s acting method and his manner.

Initially, Sutherland also began his career with several unimportant roles in British theater and television sets. He has starred in plays such as Hamlet and The Tempest, proving his versatility as a versatile actor in the acting field. Although both of these roles were relatively small, they gave Sutherland valuable acting experience and insight into the complexity of working as a professional actor.

Success and the call of Hollywood

So Sutherland’s rise to fame came in the 1960s when he was featured in the film The Dirty Dozen (1967). Vernon Pinkley, a member of the self-styled criminal group, drew attention for his realistic and charming portrayal of Bub. Starring in this role meant that Sutherland then became a household name in Hollywood, and he was given even more significant roles that allowed him to move up.

The hit The Dirty Dozen paved the way for Sutherland to star in Robert Altman’s MAS*H (1970), in which the actor played Captain Benjamin Franklin Hawkeye Pierce. This truly established him as one of the best Hollywood actors, and the film launched a series of great roles in his career.
