The cast of the classic American television series Beverly Hills, 90210, which became a cultural icon of the 1990s, reunite for a special event in 2024.
On September 14, the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210 gathered at 90s Con 2024 in Daytona Beach, where they shared their thoughts and relived some memories of the iconic show.
Brian Austin Green, Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth and Ian Ziering were all present for the reunion. Green said he “loved” the concept of the show, which followed a story about rich kids at West Beverly Hills High School. However, Garth expressed regret about her time on the show.
“I wish I hadn’t done that. I didn’t want to disrespect them,” Garth said.
He said the producer of the show was a friend of a friend of his, and he remembers him coming to his living room and sitting him down to convince him to do the show and consider it a big opportunity of his life.
“They asked me to do this and I didn’t know how to say no then. But the people were very nice and I wish them all the best,” she said.
While only Jennie Garth, the late Shannen Doherty (who passed away after a long battle with cancer) and Tori Spelling appeared on 90210, as well as newer stars like Shenae Grimes and AnnaLynne McCord, the original Beverly Hills, 90210 cast reunited for another revival with Fox’s BH90210 in 2019. In this series, they played heightened versions of themselves in a serialized drama.
During the 90s Con panel, the four reminisced about the good times they had on the original series, which ran for 10 seasons from 1990 to 2000. In addition, Brian Austin Green said the crew had a great time making the series due to the absence of social media and too many cameras.
He said that people liked it because in the era without internet, the audience was not expecting such a unique series on television. He said, “Honestly, I don’t think this time it will have the same impact as it did before.”
On the other hand, actor Gabrielle Cartwright believes people loved the show because of its authenticity. It was fearless in tackling serious issues including teenage sex, domestic violence, and alcohol and drug abuse.
Beverly Hills, 90210 became an important part of 90s pop culture and influenced many other shows in the genre. While it was praised for addressing relevant issues and its engaging storylines, it also received criticism at the time for its melodramatic plot and stereotypical characters.
The show spawned several spin-offs, including Melrose Place (a direct spin-off focusing on different characters) and 90210 (a reboot that aired from 2008 to 2013). In the meantime, 90s Con Florida is happening at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach through Sunday, September 15.
