Ghee, also known as clarified butter, is widely used for cooking in Indian cuisine. Ghee is made up of healthy fats and helps improve digestion, gut health and may even aid weight loss. Speaking of weight loss, there is one beverage that has become popular in the last few years for its purported weight loss benefits. This beverage is called ghee coffee or bullet coffee, in which a small amount of ghee is mixed with black coffee. People usually consume this beverage first thing in the morning. Many celebrities have also admitted that they drink this unusual combination regularly as part of their fitness regimen.
But does ‘ghee coffee’ work holistically in the long run? Calling the drink a “shortcut”, integrative lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho said he would like to take a “moment of silence for those who think ghee coffee will help them lose weight.” On his Instagram handle, he wrote, “There is no shortcut to fat loss.” According to Luke, the better way to consume ghee and coffee is “separately”.

To lose weight, he suggests “eat smarter, move more, sleep deeply and breathe more regularly…keep it simple.” He adds, “Stop looking for shortcuts and choosing science over your hobby…do the work, change your behavior and actions and repeat.”

The post caught the attention of diet-conscious audiences and those trying to lose weight. Soon, the comment section was flooded with doubts and comments about ‘ghee coffee’. Take a look:
An Instagram user wrote, “Oh I took it a few days ago.. just once.. but it helped me avoid unwanted cravings for 3-4 hours.” To this, Luke replied, “What happens when you get cravings again in the evening or at night… instead of giving in to these obsessions, work on your behavior. Protein can do the same.”
One food trend tracker asked, “If it’s not good why are celebrities and their so-called high-profile nutritionists promoting it everywhere?” Another argued, “But it’s a good pre-workout that gives people a much cleaner energy boost than the sugar-laden ones they usually get.” To this, the lifestyle coach responded, “The only energy you need before a workout is from good mitochondrial health.”

One joked, “Ghee halwa is better than ghee coffee.” Sharing a hint from Luke’s previous work, another asked, “How about coffee with coconut oil… I read in your book that it burns fat.” To this, he replied, “Coconut oil and ghee are different… coconut is an MCT (medium chain triglycerides) and yes, that makes sense.”
