Actress Divya Bharathi has criticized filmmaker Naresh Kuppili for his misogynistic behavior during the making of Telugu film ‘GOAT’. Sharing her ordeal on social media on Wednesday, she accused the director of using derogatory words for her and questioned why her co-star Sudigali Sudheer did not intervene at that time. Her post has now inspired new conversations about respect and workplace culture in the film industry.

Divya Bharathi shared a screenshot in which Kuppili allegedly mentioned her “Chilka” – a word which translates to ‘bird’ but is widely used as a derogatory term for women in Telugu – and commented that she was only suitable for the role of “second lead actress”. Addressing the issue publicly on X, she said that such comments reflect systemic sexism rather than casual humor.

“Calling women ‘chilaka’ or any other term is not a harmless joke – it is a reflection of deep-rooted misogyny,” she wrote on X.

He also expressed disappointment at Sudigali Sudheer for remaining silent. She added, “What frustrates me most is that the hero remains silent, allowing this culture to survive another day. I choose better. I choose workplaces where women are not the butt of jokes, where every voice matters, and where respect cannot be compromised. It’s not just a choice – it’s my standard as an artist and a woman!”

Following the post, online users expressed a mixed reaction of support and criticism. Responding to comments alleging repeated confrontations with colleagues, Divya Bharathi clarified: “I have worked repeatedly with the same team, actors and crew in Tamil cinema without any confrontation. Only one director crossed the limits and made derogatory comments. He decided to make it public, and I have every right to respond.”

She reiterated that her concerns went beyond a comment and highlighted what she described as a pattern of behavior that made her feel uncomfortable on set. He said the incident underscores the need for safer, more accountable workplaces where dignity is upheld without exception.
