Director Vasan Bala on KJO’s reputation: Karan hasn’t inherited it
Director Vasan Bala recently shared his views on Karan Johar’s reputation in Bollywood, saying that it is the result of Johar’s own efforts. He also praised Alia Bhatt.

Jigra director Vasan Bala recently talked about filmmaker Karan Johar’s reputation in the film industry. Bala commented that Karan Johar did not inherit the reputation he has today. He also praised Karan as well as Alia Bhatt and acknowledged their hard work to achieve their respectable position in the film industry.
In a conversation with VOA India, Bala highlighted Johar’s achievements, emphasizing that Karan Johar did not inherit his position but instead made some of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema. “A lot of resources go into making a film, and it’s also where both the star and the producer earn a reputation for themselves. Karan has not inherited (Karan did not inherit it); He has made the biggest blockbusters and has earned this place for himself. And Alia has also earned it in 10 years,” he said.
He expressed his guilt over not meeting expectations, especially in terms of box office returns. Bala said, “Box office matters because it is not my money. Filmmaking is an expensive art and both Karan and Alia have built their reputations through hard-earned success.
Despite Jigra falling short of its financial target, with worldwide earnings not exceeding Rs 50 crore against the production cost of Rs 90 crore, Bala considered the importance of ensuring at least minimum returns.
He discussed the dynamics on the set with Bhatt, noting how quickly he would decide on scenes. “She’s very intuitive, I would always choose the word ‘intelligent’ for her, because she’s not at all calculating,” he said.
Bala concluded by highlighting the pure intentions behind Bhatt’s characterization and said, “She doesn’t calculate what she’s doing as the hero. So, every time we decide something right before the scene , so a small discussion happens, and that small discussion starts and ends very quickly… With Satya, it’s all about need, not about want. Greed is always involved, but needs are always pure.”
