Paul Feig hasn’t held back from discussing how Robin Williams “sabotaged” him when he worked as a stand-up comedian. The actor talked about it on Sony Music Entertainment’s Dinner on Me podcast with Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
Feig appeared on the podcast on Tuesday, October 8 and said that he built his career when people like Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Williams were in the game. He added, “I mean, yes, when I finally got the chance to be a performer at The Improv, Robin Williams groped me a few times.”
The acclaimed director says that although he started his career in it, he was not “one of the main guys” in it and got the place later. He recalled how he once lost his chance to perform because of Good Will Hunting Star.
The ‘Bridesmaids’ director shared that it was once his time to take the stage with the entire audience in the room. He expressed excitement and said that he was told that Williams wanted to come on stage and do a quick set first, to which Feig had no objection.
The director shared that the Dead Poets Society star took an hour to finish the job and when his turn came everyone left, except for one woman who was waiting for her husband to return from the washroom.
It must have been difficult for Feig but eventually that was all about to change. In the podcast episode, he talked about Freaks and Geeks being picked up by NBC, which was a big deal for him and changed his life.
He said, “I remember I was on the Tube and I had this little notebook and I wrote in the notebook, I think I’m going to get everything I ever wanted out of my life.”
Feig shared that he couldn’t “believe” it because he had been dealing with the struggle for a long time. The filmmaker recalled that when its first episode aired, it received good reviews from the audience. Speaking to Posdcast, he also gave an exciting update that the sequel to A Simple Favor was “almost finished.”
