New Delhi: Delhi has reported a worrying increase in cholera cases this year, in which hospitals have recorded classic symptoms to dozens of patients: severe diarrhea, dehydration and vomiting. Health officials say that contaminated water and poor hygiene are the main reasons behind the spike.

According to official data, more than 240 cases of cholera have been detected in 104 Delhi wards, marking a faster growth compared to previous years. Digested drainage and irregular water supply areas have been the most difficult.

The Delhi Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified its water testing and cleanliness drive, collecting thousands of samples for contamination check. Health workers have also been deployed to increase awareness about boiling water before drinking and maintain proper hand hygiene.

“Cholera spreads quickly through unprotected water and impure food,” said a senior health officer. “Immediate revival and medical treatment are important as the disease can be fatal within hours when untreated.”

Experts warned that the monsoon stagnation and the overflow of drains could have spoiled the situation. Doctors of major hospitals have urged the residents that they experience water diarrhea or weakness.

The city has also seen an increase in cases of malaria and dengue, inspiring the authorities to intensify the efforts of pomp and mosquito-control.

Health officials have urged citizens:

  • Drink only boiled or filtered water.
  • During this, avoid eating street food.
  • Wash your hands repeatedly with soap and water.
  • Cover the stored water containers properly.

While no outbreak has been declared on any large scale yet, experts have been emphasized that preventive measures are important to prevent further spread.
