A new Netflix film about Mary, the mother of Jesus, has sparked controversy because of its casting choices. Directed by DJ Caruso, the film aimed to present an authentic portrayal of Mary’s life and challenges.

A new Netflix biopic on the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus, has sparked controversy following its release on December 6. Directed by DJ Caruso, the film explores Mary’s journey from childhood to motherhood, highlighting the difficulties and challenges she faces.
The lead role is played by 22-year-old Israeli actress and model Noa Cohen, whose casting has drawn mixed reactions, especially amid the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Critics on social media have questioned the decision, with one user on Is killing.” in the world and destroying their heritage sites.”
It is deeply offensive to have an Israeli actor playing the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, while Israel is carrying out genocide against Palestinians, killing some of the oldest Christian communities in the world and destroying their heritage sites. – John P (@JohnPatrick500) 13 November 2024
Others defended this option, noting that Jesus was Jewish and Palestine did not exist in Mary’s time.

Caruso, known for directing films such as Disturbia and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, defended Cohen’s casting, emphasizing the importance of authenticity.
Caruso explained, “It was important to us that Mary, along with most of our primary cast, be cast from Israel.” WireShe also described her vision for the film as portraying a “real, human Mary”.
Cohen addressed the response, saying, “Mary was a young woman, possibly filled with her own fears and uncertainties, who was suddenly asked to take on a huge responsibility. Our goal was to convey her emotional weight and inner strength. Had to do it.”
The film also stars Ido Takeo as Joseph and Anthony Hopkins as King Herod, offering a dramatic retelling of one of Christianity’s most iconic figures.
