Deadpool and Wolverine made a superhero smash at the Indian box office by grossing Rs 25 crore, $3 million on the first day. This is the sixth best opening day for a Hollywood film in India, behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and ahead of Thor: Love and Thunder.
Deadpool and Wolverine is the biggest opener for a Hollywood film with an age-restricted rating with Oppenheimer earning Rs 17.60 crore, though such ratings are not as important in India as they are in some Western markets. It is also the biggest opening for an X-Men movie, surpassing Deadpool 2’s Rs 12.70 crore collection in 2018.
More important than opening numbers is a film’s initial audience reception. Recent Marvel films have had strong openings but failed to capitalise on it due to average reception, including the two MCU films mentioned above. In contrast, Deadpool and Wolverine have received strong word-of-mouth ratings, with opening ratings of 9 on ticket booking platform BookMyShow, compared to 7.9 for Thor 4 and 8.1 for Doctor Strange 2.
Unlike recent Hollywood films which were one-sided in South India, Deadpool and Wolverine were closer to normal proportions, and had a strong opening in North India. 30 percent higher than Thor 4 on day one in North India, but about 20 percent lower in the South. Competition from Tamil film Rayan has a little hand in this, a solo release could have added another one or two crores for the film. This could work out well for the film, especially for the weekend as South India can see a drop in collections on the second day for big openers, which will not be a big problem for this film now.
