Sequels are generally a safe bet at the box office. Post-pandemic, a large portion of hit movies have been sequels or part of established franchises. There have also been cases where films that were not originally meant to be sequels or part of a franchise were released with the sequel title to gain better market appeal.
Ajay Devgan recently made a few sequels, two of which (Drishyam 2 and Raid 2) did well, while the other (Singham Again) did okay. There was also one (Son of Sardar 2), which did not perform well at all. Another sequel, De De Pyaar De 2, is arriving in theaters this week. The original, released in 2019, did well, opening with Rs. 8 crores nett and ultimately Rs. Earnings of Rs. Total earning of 95 crores, which means good appreciation.
However, those were better times at the box office and a lot has changed since then. Digital has destroyed the theatrical base, especially for mid-range films, including most rom-coms. Post the pandemic, it has been a struggle for rom-coms to take off, with only Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar managing to take a double-digit debut, and even get a few holiday boosts in some parts of the country. In these circumstances, films depend on the post-release reception and that seems to be the case with De De Pyar De 2.
Despite having a good trailer, the expectations from the film are around the same as the original film on the opening day, i.e. Rs. 8 crore nett. Advance sales are low, with less than 20 thousand tickets sold in national chains at the time of writing. The final number may reach around 30K. Based on these sales, the film will still have to work to reach those figures on that day. The film will be expected to get a good reception, which will lead to a rise in the collections on Friday night and then Saturday and Sunday will see a good growth, which basically depends on the audience.
