David Spade opened up about his journey on Saturday Night Live and revealed that people believed all of his SNL characters were gay. During his recent appearance on the Fly on the Wall podcast, the comedian shared that people used to come up to him and ask him about the sexuality of the characters he played on the show.
Speaking to podcast hosts, Spade shared, “I played a character called The Receptionist where I was really isolated from people.” He added, “Like, ‘Oh, and you…? And this is about…?’ And then people will say, who is that gay character you’re playing?’
“I’m like, ‘I don’t think it’s gay,'” the actor-comedian told the man. They’re like, ‘No, you’re gay and this is gay and there’s a gay person in every sketch of yours.'”
The actor also claimed that his mother also believed that Spade was gay in real life, in addition to the characters on the show. The host interjected and asked why his mom would think that, and the comedian quipped, “She thought I was coming out. When I look back, I’m like, yes, I see it am.”
Meanwhile, talking about his other characters, the actor mentioned that there were roles in which he would not recognize popular personalities, including MC Hammer. In the sketch, Hammer says, “Tell him it’s Hammer,” and Spade replies, “And he’ll know you because…?”

Podcast host and former SNL star Dana Carvey, who recently played President Joe Biden, shared with the audience that Spade’s receptionist character wasn’t about owning sexuality, but about personality.
“It’s just laziness, not any sexual orientation,” Carvey said in the interview.
In addition to The Receptionist, the actor is also known for his popular role as Dennis Finch, an executive assistant who took up cheerleading in college and was revealed to be gay by his father.
