When David Henry and Selena Gomez decided to revive the magic of Wizards of Waverly Place, they had a clear goal in mind. After years of pitching the reboot Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, they wanted to recreate the strong sense of family that created the original show. Henry, who played Justin Russo in the original series, said this goal was non-negotiable for him and Gomez.
In an interview with People, Henry said, “My and Selena’s goal from day one was to first and foremost recreate that culture in the workplace, where everyone can feel like family.” He added, “We were a family on camera and off camera (in the original series), and that’s what makes it special.”
As Henry and Gomez worked on the reboot, they were determined to recreate that intimate atmosphere with the new cast. Henry shared how pleased he was with the young actors he brought with him. “Our cast is amazing,” Henry said. “We feel like this is a Season 3 show (where) everyone is comfortable. There is a loving atmosphere, a great culture on the set.”
This family dynamic became the foundation of the new series, which begins after a mysterious incident in Viztech, where Henry’s character, Justin Russo, left his wizarding life behind. In the reboot, Justin enjoys a normal life with his wife and two sons, but his routine is disrupted by a young magician in need of training.
Henry said that the cast’s engagement was important to making the show interesting to watch. “There is an environment of love and encouragement and we did it. I think you’ll feel it on screen,” he said.
In Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, fans will meet a new set of characters, including Janice Lynn Brown as Billie, a young wizard who wants Justine’s help. Joining Henry on screen are Alcaio Thiele as Justin’s eldest son, Roman, and Max Matenko as his youngest son, Milo.
Mimi Gianopulos plays Justin’s wife, Giada. These new faces were chosen to bring new energy to the show while maintaining the family feel of the original series.
This new story combines old memories with new challenges, resulting in an exciting world for both old fans and new ones. Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, which premieres on Disney Channel on Tuesday, October 29 at 8 PM ET, promises to bring back the magic, with episodes also available for streaming on Disney+.
