A Reddit user has criticized Swiggy Instamart for allegedly delivering underweight vegetables, sharing pictures of the same as well as screenshots of his chat with the Swiggy support team. The post has caught the attention of many people on social media and started a discussion about the many problems associated with ordering groceries online. The Reddit user reported that the incident happened about a month ago. “It was getting late and the local vendors had run out of vegetables and so I decided to try ordering from Instamart. The prices were a bit expensive compared to the local market but it was essential for what I was willing to pay. One of the vegetables, he wrote, “made me check the weight of all the other vegetables.”

He has given additional information in the pictures attached to the post. He says he paid Rs 89 for a piece of cauliflower, which should have weighed between 400-600 grams. His handheld weighing machine showed that the piece he found weighed only 145 grams. Similarly, he claims that he paid Rs 42 for a quarter kilo of capsicum (green capsicum), but he got only 170 grams. According to the pictures given in the post, his order of 1 kg potato, for which he had paid Rs 46, turned out to be 965 grams.
The Reddit user called Swiggy support “shameless” because “they were unwilling to replace the items and were trying to finesse with wording for a partial refund.” In the screenshot attached to the post, we get a glimpse of his candid conversation with the Swiggy team. He asks for a replacement or a full refund of Rs 177, but the officials (even after the demand increased) insist on processing only a 50% refund (equivalent to Rs 88). The user said he reported the problem to the government’s Ingram consumer helpline and mailed his bank to reverse credit the amount. He considers it a cautionary tale for the future. He has also warned other Reddit users to be careful. He wrote, “Lesson learned. Don’t go by the weight stickers on products. Actually check them and file a complaint if you notice deviations. And of course buy from local sellers, it’s cheaper and less cumbersome. Go for discount deals.” Don’t fall into the trap, you’ll end up paying more out of pocket.”

The post received several comments from other users who have reportedly faced similar issues on Swiggy Instamart and other online platforms. Many people claim to have faced such issues with their orders and redressal requests. Check out some of the reactions below:
“Looks like I need scales now.”
“I have a digital scale. I received underweight products. Same story, I was given a 50% refund and I agreed. Then I realized what about others who don’t have a scale? How widespread is this practice I wouldn’t even think about weighing it, but my son was playing with it the other day and that’s how it came out.’
No matter how much discount or fast delivery they offer, these startups can’t force me to buy vegetables from an app, haha.
“For the last two years, we have ordered vegetables online every day from quick commerce apps. I feel like I have to calculate how much money these apps have looted from us.”
“At least my local vendor gives me 20-50 grams more every time and charges a fixed rate for items like cauliflower and cabbage, irrespective of their size.”
NDTV Food reached out to Swiggy Instamart for comment. A spokesperson for the company said, “This particular instance is a discrepancy by the merchant, and we are investigating how it occurred.
