James Gunn and Peter Safran’s big dream of a new version of DC Studios is close to becoming a reality, starting with two upcoming highly anticipated projects – Creature Commandos for television and Gunn’s own film Superman. DC’s new look with these two exciting projects will mark the beginning of many upcoming slates that will feature new actors for various DC roles. Gunn recently celebrated the anniversary of the original Creature Commandos series in a new post on his social handle.
James Gunn celebrates the anniversary of Creature Commandos
Creature Commandos is going to be one of the most important series of DC Studios, and this series will start a new dawn for the studio. The animated series has been in the news ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the studio as partners to run it as co-CEOs.
Recently, Gunn took to his X account (formerly known as Twitter) to celebrate the anniversary of the iconic comic book Weird War Tales #93, in which the Creature Commandos first appear. “Today is the anniversary of the first appearance of the #CreatureCommandos in Weird War Tales #93,” Gunn wrote on X. The DC boss also made sure to give a shout-out to the characters’ creators, J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, along with “Joe Kubert’s cover art.”
Gunn further explained that the original comic book “will be the inspiration for DC Studios’ #CreatureCommandos show coming this December, which you might love as much as we do.” Weird War Tales #93 first appeared in the 1980s, and nearly 40 years later, the Creature Commandos – a group of misfits with superpowers – are set to make their debut in mainstream media, which holds significance for DC’s new universe.
Gans’ celebration of the Misfits team also serves as a brush-up ahead of the show’s premiere on HBO and Max in December. Of course, fans are already excited for the project, but Gans’ take on the show makes it even more exciting, as he openly revealed that he loves the animated series.
What can we expect from Creature Commandos?
The upcoming animated series won’t stray far from the narrative vision of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad movie. In fact, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will have control over the ragtag demons. “It’s a cornerstone of the legacy we’re tasked with carrying forward at DC Studios, and it plays an integral role in our future storytelling vision,” Gunn said in a video message in June, addressing the Annecy Animation Festival crowd following the show’s presentation. James Gunn further stated that his goal is to unify DC’s films, TV shows, animation, and games under a single vision. By aligning these various mediums, he aims to create a coherent and consistent DC Universe. This approach allows for diverse and engaging content that stands on its own, providing a “spectacular stand-alone entertainment experience”, while also contributing to a larger, interconnected narrative.
Gans’ statement essentially means that the show’s characters “may come and go in animation or in games or on the big screen,” but he promised that they “will remain the same throughout: same characters, same history, same actors.”
James Gunn explained that the new series continues right after the conclusion of Peacemaker season one. In this follow-up, Amanda Waller finds herself in a difficult position, no longer able to easily sacrifice human life for her secret and morally ambiguous missions. So, “she recruits a group of mismatched people, different from the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”
While it’s very similar to previous DC projects such as the Suicide Squad films and Peacemaker, Creature Commandos will be an extension of that. But the DC boss said what makes the show different is that they are “actual literal monsters,” adding, “I can’t wait for you to meet them. Creating this series has been one of the greatest joys of my life.”
The Creature Commandos’ connection to The Peacemaker season 1 makes sense, as the John Cena-starrer series has already teased Waller’s moral and ethical boundaries. As for Peacemaker season 2, Cena recently teased that fans can expect his show in 2025.
With Davis returning to voice Waller, Creature Commandos also stars David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Indira Varma as the Bride, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovich, Steve Agee as John Economos and Sean Gunn in two roles – GI Robot and Weasel.
