Court stays release of Aamir Khan’s son’s film ‘Maharaj’ on Hindu group’s plea
The release of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut film ‘Maharaj’ has been stayed by the Gujarat High Court following a petition by a Hindu group.
The Gujarat High Court on Thursday stayed the release of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut film ‘Maharaj’ on a plea by a Hindu group which claimed the film would incite violence against followers of a Hindu sect.
The film is directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra. It was scheduled to release on Netflix on June 14,
The stay order was issued on a petition filed by devotees of Lord Krishna and followers of Vallabhacharya (Pushtimarg sect). The petition alleged that the film, which is apparently based on the Maharaj defamation case of 1862, may affect public order and incite violence against the followers of the sect and Hinduism.
According to the petition, the Maharaj defamation case of 1862, which arose out of “allegations of misconduct by a prominent person” and was decided by English judges of the Supreme Court of Bombay, condemns the Hindu religion and contains “severely blasphemous remarks” against Lord Krishna as well as devotional songs and hymns.

The group also argued that attempts were being made to release the film in a clandestine manner without a trailer or any promotional events so as to prevent people from accessing the story. It also argued that if such a film was allowed to be released, their religious sentiments would be seriously hurt and irreparable damage would be caused.
Justice Sangeeta Vishen of the Gujarat High Court considered the arguments of the Pushti Margis and passed an interim order prohibiting the release of the film in any way. Now the hearing of this case will be held on June 18.
Meanwhile, a The slogan ‘Boycott Netflix’ was trending on social mediaMany people have come out against this move and claimed that Netflix is promoting ‘anti-Hindu’ content.
According to a press release issued by Netflix last month, ‘Maharaj’ is based on Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer who was a leading advocate for women’s rights and social reform.
