President Donald Trump is publicly thinking about the third term service in the White House, but the 22nd amendment to the US Constitution does not make such a scenario much likely.
78 -year -old Trump said on Sunday that he was “not joking” about the third term service as President and told NBC News that there were “ways” that would allow it to be.
Most constitutional scholars disagree.
And the founder will present any serious effort to amend the document – which currently writes a third term to a third term – will send the country to an unwanted region.
– History of President –
The first President of the US, George Washington, took an example by step after serving two terms in the office, but the two-function limit was formally codified after more than 150 years.
Only one US President – Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt – has given more than two tenure in the White House.
Roosevelt was elected four times President – 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944. His fourth term ended at the age of 63, with the death of April 12, 1945 ahead of time.
Other former commanders, especially Ulysses S. Grant and Theodore Ruosevelt, have sought a third term in the office, but have failed to nominate or win the election.
Trump is only the second President to win a non -executive post in the office, won in 2016, lost in 2020, and won again in 2024.
The first Grover was Cleveland, who won in 1884, lost in 1888, and won in 1892.
– 22nd Amendment –
The 22nd amendment limited a President to two positions, two years after Roosevelt’s death in 1947-two-thirds of the Committee Assembly and two-thirds of the Senate.
It was confirmed in 1951 by three-fourths of the 50 US state assemblies.
The lesson states: “No person will be selected more than twice for the President’s office.”
It also handles a President who has served more than two years “for a word in which another person was elected President” from being selected more than once again.
– Longshot Resolution –
Since his presidential campaign and since he took office, Trump has made fun of several occasions about the service of the third term.
But his comment in the weekend was his most wide about the possibility and by the phrase “I’m not joking.”
The Republican President said, “Many people want me to do so.”
Trump was asked by the NBC of a landscape, under which Vice President JD Vance will run for the President in 2028 and then “pass” Trump as his ongoing friend.
“Well, this is one. But other are also,” Trump said without expansion.
The 12th amendment would seem to close the door on it, however.
“Any person will not be constitutionally disqualified to the presidency, not eligible for the vice -president of the United States,” it says.
In January, Tennessy’s Republican Lawist Andy Ogles introduced a long shot resolution in the House to suit Trump, which would allow a President to serve non -executive conditions to serve a third term.
A constitutional conference can also be convened to amend the US Constitution, but it is not considered equally likely.
At the age of 82 years and seven months, Trump will already be the oldest President at the end of his second term in January 2029.
Democrats Joe Biden were 82 years and two months old when he left the post in January.
Despite the obvious difficulties to overcome the constitutional two-term range, the pantors have noticed Trump’s comments, and his possibilities of winning the race for the 2028 presidential presidential race have jumped.
According to the offshore speculator betonline.ag, the possibility of achieving Trump’s third term, six to one, before 10, before one, current Vice President JD Vance rankings in second place among those who could win the election.
