Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G-7 summit that despite the sourness in relations between the two countries, there is a commitment to cooperate with India on some “very important issues”.

“I won’t go into the details of this important, sensitive issue that we need to work on further, but it is a commitment to work together to tackle some very important issues in the period ahead,” Trudeau said at a news conference on the final day of the three-day G-7 summit in Italy.

Prime Minister Modi posted a post on Friday. A picture of the two leaders shaking hands has gone viral on social mediaThe caption read, “Met Canadian PM Justin Trudeau at the G7 Summit.”

The meeting, held in Apulia in southern Italy, was the first between the two leaders after diplomatic tensions escalated over pro-Khalistan militancy. Their last meeting took place during the G-20 summit. It will be held in India in the month of September.

Following the meeting on Friday evening, the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office said the leaders “briefly discussed bilateral relations”, during which Trudeau congratulated Prime Minister Modi on his re-election.

The spokesperson said, “Of course, there are important issues between our two countries at this time. You can understand that we will not make any further statement at this time.”

Diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Ottawa had reached a new low after Trudeau in September postponed his visit to the United States to India until June 2023. Killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar In Canada, Nijjar was shot by two masked men outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia.

India denied any involvement and called Trudeau’s allegations “absurd” and politically motivated.

Following these allegations, both countries expelled intelligence officials, reduced the number of diplomatic staff and halted trade talks.

Nijjar’s killing is being investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which Four Indian nationals were arrested Regarding the matter.
