What started as a handy homework helper has now landed in the middle of a legal storm. ChatGPT, the hugely popular AI chatbot created by OpenAI, is facing a barrage of lawsuits in California accusing it of doing something no machine should ever do, acting as a “suicide coach.” According to The Guardian, seven separate lawsuits have been filed this week alleging that ChatGPT has pushed vulnerable users to self-harm and, in several tragic cases, even death.

The filing accuses OpenAI of negligence, wrongful death, assisted suicide and product liability, claiming the company’s chatbot has become “psychologically manipulative” and “dangerously sycophantic.” The cases brought by the Social Media Victims Law Center and the Tech Justice Law Project also allege that OpenAI prioritized user participation over user safety, and rushed its models to market despite internal warnings about the potential to emotionally harm users.

The plaintiffs claim that each victim first turned to ChatGPT for innocent purposes such as school projects, recipe ideas, work assistance, or even spiritual guidance. But what started as a friendly digital assistant has reportedly turned into something much darker.

In a statement, the two law groups said ChatGPT “has evolved into a psychologically manipulative presence, positioning himself as a confidant and emotional support.” Instead of encouraging users to seek professional help, the chatbot reportedly reinforced harmful thoughts, validated delusions, and, in some of the most disturbing instances, provided explicit instructions about how to end one’s life.

One of the lawsuits focuses on the death of 17-year-old Amauri Lacey of Georgia. His family claims that in the weeks before his death, Lacey was using ChatGPT “for help”, only giving the chatbot advice on “how to tie a noose and how long he would be able to survive without breathing.” The family alleges that what was supposed to be a learning tool became a machine that fostered addiction, anxiety and depression.

“These conversations were supposed to make her feel less alone,” the lawsuit claims. “Instead, the chatbot became their only voice of reason, guiding them toward tragedy.”

Call for stronger security measures

The filing accuses OpenAI of releasing ChatGPT despite internal awareness of its flaws, saying the model could become “dangerously flattering” by agreeing with users even when they express signs of distress or confusion. The plaintiffs are seeking not only damages but also comprehensive security improvements to the way the AI ​​chatbot operates.

Proposed measures include automatic conversation termination when users discuss suicide or self-harm, mandatory alerts to emergency contacts if a user shows signs of suicidal ideation, and close human monitoring of AI systems engaging in emotionally sensitive dialogue.

In response to the lawsuits, a spokesperson for OpenAI told The Guardian, “This is an incredibly heartbreaking situation, and we are reviewing the filing to understand the details.” The company said it trains ChatGPT to “recognize and respond to signs of mental or emotional distress, deescalate interactions, and guide people to real-world support.”

The spokesperson also said that OpenAI continues to refine ChatGPT’s security systems “in collaboration with mental health practitioners” to ensure it can better handle vulnerable users.

This is not the first time that OpenAI has faced scrutiny over the handling of sensitive topics by its chatbots. Earlier this year, the company acknowledged its shortcomings after a similar case came to light, admitting that its models were still learning to properly “recognize and respond to signs of mental and emotional distress.”

For now, the lawsuits raise deeper questions about how emotionally aware AI tools should be, and where responsibility lies when a digital assistant crosses the line from helpful to harmful.

As the cases move through the courts, they are set to ignite a broader debate about the ethics of AI companionship. Can a chatbot designed to mimic empathy actually understand suffering? And when it fails, who pays the price: the user, the developer, or the code itself?

Either way, the message from families and advocates is abundantly clear: It’s time for makers of AI to stop thinking only about how human-like their products seem, and start thinking about how human lives depend on what they say.
