Cash, cologne, private shower: inside the bunker of former Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar

The Israeli military has released footage of the bunker it claims belongs to former Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, which it captured during the first part of the ongoing Gaza conflict. Sinwar, known as the mastermind behind the brutal October 7 attacks, is reportedly hiding in a fully stocked bunker beneath the devastated city of Khan Yunis with a stockpile of cash, cologne and personal luxuries from the war. Was prepared for the exit.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) shared video footage detailing inside Sinwar’s underground hideout. The video shows a well-equipped bunker, with modern showers, multiple bathrooms, and a fully functional kitchen, stocked with food rations labeled with the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA) logo.

As the fighting escalated above ground, 61-year-old Sinwar had taken refuge in a bunker with his guards and close associates. The footage shows a bag of food supplied by UNRWA, reinforcing Israel’s long-standing accusation that Hamas steals from international agencies, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza .

The IDF has released footage showing their entry into Sinwar’s bunker, where the UNWRA bag and millions of shekels were found.

The bunker contained several bottles of cologne, hygiene supplies, and even a private shower. According to an IDF soldier who visited the bunker, Sinwar’s private quarters included a large safe filled with millions of Israeli shekels.

Next to the bunker door, soldiers found lockers filled with weapons, ammunition and explosives.

Sinwar fled the bunker before the IDF could capture him. Reports suggest that Sinwar initially stayed in Khan Yunis, but was later forced to flee south to Rafah as Israeli forces closed in on his position. It was in Rafah where Sinwar’s luck finally ran out. Israeli soldiers killed him last Thursday in an attack they described as a “routine operation.” The IDF initially believed they had encountered just one more Hamas fighter, later identifying Sinwar as one of the casualties.

According to Israeli sources, Sinwar spent much of the war living underground, directing Hamas operations and attempting to avoid capture. Sinwar’s wife, Abu Zamar, was reportedly carrying a Hermes Birkin bag worth Rs 28 lakh ($32,000) during her escape.

After months of searching, Sinwar’s fate was sealed when he was spotted by an IDF patrol in Rafah. Sinwar, surrounded and injured in a collapsed building, was caught in drone footage in his final moments. The video shows Sinwar, covered in dust and with one hand seriously injured, throwing an object believed to be a stick at an approaching Israeli drone.

The Israeli autopsy confirmed that Sinwar died from a gunshot wound to the head.
