Case against Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and his followers in Bangladesh

According to a media report, a case was registered on Sunday over a clash between police and followers of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das at the court complex in Chittagong.

The Dhaka Tribune newspaper said the Hindu leader, arrested on sedition charges, has been named as the main accused along with 164 identified persons and 400 to 500 unidentified people in the case.

The complaint was filed in the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate MD Abu Bakar Siddiqui by businessman and Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh activist Enamul Haq.

Haq alleged in his complaint that he was attacked by followers of Chinmoy Krishna Das while returning home after completing land registry work in the court on November 26.

The businessman claimed that he was targeted for wearing ‘Punjabi’, kurta and cap, resulting in injuries on his right hand and head.

According to the newspaper, bystanders rescued him and admitted him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Haq also said that his delay in filing the case was due to his prolonged illness from the attack.

His lawyer was quoted as saying, “Haq was attacked in the court premises on November 26 by followers of Chinmoy Krishna. His right hand was broken and he suffered head injuries. 164 people have been named in the case , in which Chinmoy Krishna is the main accused.” ,

The incident follows a series of clashes related to the imprisonment of Bangladesh Somilito Sanatani Jagran Jot spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna.

Earlier on November 27, the police had registered three related cases at the Kotwali police station, naming several persons and hundreds of unidentified people for obstruction and attacks on law enforcement.

Separately, another case was filed on Tuesday by a businessman, accusing him of being attacked by a group near Rangam Cinema Hall on November 26.

The complaint names 29 individuals, including political organizations and members of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), along with 40 to 50 unidentified individuals, the report said.

Relations between India and Bangladesh came under strain after the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government came to power on August 5 after ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country following student-led protests.

Relations have worsened in recent weeks following repeated attacks on Hindus, and particularly the arrest of a Hindu monk who was a former member of ISKCON Bangladesh.

The monk’s supporters had started protesting after Das’s arrest in a treason case at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on November 25.

On 26 November, Saiful Islam Alif, an assistant government prosecutor, was killed during a protest in Chattogram after Bhikshu was denied bail.

On 3 December, a Bangladesh court postponed the hearing on Chinmoy Krishna’s bail plea to 2 January on a government plea as no lawyer appeared on his behalf.
