"Canada is the place where a boy from Punjab…": Trudeau said on meeting Diljit Dosanjh

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh ahead of the Indian musician’s historic concert at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Ahead of his concert on Saturday night, Dosanjh shared a video of Trudeau’s visit with his 21.7 million followers on Instagram. In the video, he and Trudeau are seen greeting each other with folded hands, followed by a hug.

Trudeau also posed for pictures with the singer’s team as they greeted him with chants of “Justin”, “Justin” and the musician’s signature line: “Punjabis aa gaye oye”. “Diversity is Canada’s strength. Prime Minister @justinpjtrudeau came to witness history in the making: we sold out Rogers Centre!” the “Amar Singh Chamkila” star captioned videos and photos of Trudeau’s visit.

Trudeau also shared photos on his Instagram page and praised Canada for being a diverse country.

“Stopped in to wish Diljit Dosanjh good luck before his show at Rogers Centre. Canada is a great country – where a boy from Punjab can make history and stadiums can sell out. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a superpower.” Dosanjh, a singer known for hits like “Lover”, “Proper Patola”, “GOAT” and “Born to Shine”, is currently on his “Dil-Luminati Tour”.

The singer made history by becoming the first Punjabi artist to perform at both Canadian stadiums – Vancouver’s BC Place and Toronto’s Rogers Centre – which have a seating capacity of over 54,000 and 49,000 respectively.

He later shared photos and videos of his performance, which saw fans screaming and dancing in joy as he took the stage.

This is the latest milestone in the singer’s growing global popularity. He became the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella 2023 and also recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

He also received great praise for his role of 80s Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila in the biopic directed by Imtiaz Ali.
