Can you be like 58-year-old Mike Tyson, or is he a freak by nature?

58-year-old Mike Tyson entered the ring on Saturday to fight 27-year-old Jake Paul. But research shows that cognitive and physical decline occurs around 40, which prohibits contact sports at that age. Experts and research tell us whether ‘Iron Mike’ is an exception or whether we too can be in the ring at the age of 58.

A longtime Tyson fan said, “Mike Tyson could beat most guys before they even entered the ring.” The legendary boxer, who is now 58, is set to face 27-year-old celebrity YouTuber and boxer, Jake Paul. Tyson is a legend for his age, and even at this age. And as soon as Tyson jumped in the ring and fought Paul, which was Streamed this Saturday on Netflix, There were two questions that jumped out at us. Is Tyson, 58, taking too big a risk? Is he crazy by nature or can we also achieve such physical strength and stamina at his age?

Boxing fans around the world were eagerly waiting for the ‘Iron Mike’ vs ‘Problem Child’ match. A match boxing fans will remember for a lifetime.

jake paul won the fight, For heavyweight legend Tyson, age was visible in every step he took, every punch he threw.

match was adjusted for Tyson’s age. It was a two to eight minute round match. Typically, high-profile bouts are held over 10 or 12 three-minute rounds.

The gloves were also not the usual 10oz ones used in matches. The Tyson-Paul fight saw 14oz gloves, which provided extra padding and support.

Despite better padded gloves and shorter round timing, it was still a contact sport and was one-on-one in the ring.

Questions also remain: Is Tyson a freak by nature, and is it wise for someone his age to return to the ring? And can we also achieve such strength and stamina at their age?

A freak of nature or a freak against nature?

First, we look at what is a ‘high risk age group’ according to the two boxing commissions in the US, with each state having its own regulatory bodies.

In New York, the maximum age allowed for a boxer to enter the ring has been set at 40 years. In Texas, men over the age of 36 are screened for cardiovascular health before they can box.

If we look at the research on combat sports by Dr. K Nitin Sethi of Weill Cornell Medical Center, it says that cognitive decline starts at the age of 35. But after 40, boxers are more prone to injuries.

India Today Digital also spoke to an orthopedic surgeon and sports injury expert about the decline in a boxer’s ability to become a boxer with age.

“With age, there is cognitive decline as well as muscle mass decline. But some athletes maintain good fitness levels,” Delhi-based sports injury specialist Dr Gaurav Bhardwaj told India Today Digital.

But along with muscle weakness, there are other factors that lead to decreased fitness.

Research in the Journal of Applied Physiology on American track athletes also showed that conditioning and strength training were important elements as they aged.

“People in their 50s and 60s are more likely to suffer brain injuries. The skull also becomes more sensitive as we age,” said Dr. Bhardwaj.

But despite the higher risks that come with age and returning to the ring after 19 years, Tyson has some advantages.

Mike Tyson Can Do It, But Should You Do It Too?

That said, Mike Tyson is an exception and not the norm and career athletes have large teams of dietitians, fitness instructors and ring trainers to juggle.

But still these boxers will have to be extremely careful.

The surgeon said, “They have to see how far they can push themselves. It is advisable that you see how much you can do at Tyson’s level, and no decision should be taken before that.” ” In such cases expert opinion should be useful.

It is a combat sport which involves punching the opponent on the head and injuries are an integral part of it.

but it’s not like that.

There is also a possibility of injury during rigorous training for a boxing match.

But athletes want to remain athletes, they do not want to retire until age begins to have a noticeable impact on their performance.

“Even look at cricketers in India. As the effects of aging start to show, hand-eye coordination and other muscle reactions weaken. Then, they retire,” he said.

It is important to note that the level of physical conditioning required to become a successful boxer is enormous, and even for young, trained athletes, reaching a competitive level requires years of rigorous training.

The challenge of maintaining peak performance becomes more difficult as athletes age.

Tyson’s return to the boxing ring is an exception. The changed settings and equipment are a reminder of the risks associated with aging in combat sports.

So, can you take up boxing at Tyson’s age, 58?

One has to remember that Tyson has been an athlete, which means his body is conditioned to be that way. They also have a large team of experts, including medical experts, who tell them where to stop.

Although nothing is impossible for humans, one still needs to be aware of the risks associated with it and the limits to which the human body can be safely pushed. To do this, you will need good trainers, medical experts and undergo many tests.

Because the bones are now fragile and the muscles are soft, any injury can be debilitating. Even minor injuries take a long time to heal.

A match between Tyson and Paul in July was also canceled due to Tyson’s ulcer scare.

Even with workout routines, one has to be careful.

Weight and cardio training will have to be done under the supervision and guidance of an expert. For safety’s sake, progress will be gradual and closely monitored.

There is nothing that can stop a strong-willed person, no matter the age.

At the end of Saturday’s bout, Tyson was asked what advice he would give to anyone who wants to do the same thing at age 50. Tyson said it would be difficult, and gave his “best wishes” to all who would try. However, he joked that he would return to the ring again against Jake Paul’s brother Logan Paul.

Getting fighting fit may be your New Year’s resolution, but don’t try to be Mike Tyson punching above your weight in the beginning. Knock-outs can be brutal.
