After an average performance with Vettaiyan, superstar Rajinikanth is all set with a blockbuster release, which could signal his return to full potential at the box office. His next two releases, Coolie and Jailer 2, remain among the most talked about films of Indian cinema.
Coolie is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, one of the finest young filmmakers of the South, who has become a brand himself. The first collaboration between Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj is one of the most exciting things to happen in 2025. If all goes well, Coolie has the potential to become the first Rs 1000 crore grossing film from the Kollywood film industry.
Apart from the two megastars, Coolie also stars Naga Arjun, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj and others. Additionally, the big budget action thriller also features a small but impactful cameo by Aamir Khan. The film is scheduled to release in summer 2025.
Moving forward, Jailer 2 is another big project for Rajinikanth. It is the much-awaited sequel to Jailer, released in 2023, which was a huge blockbuster at the box office. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 is expected to take the story forward from where the first part ends. Anirudh will return to compose the music, as it was his score that took the experience of the first part to a whole new level.
The official announcement video for Jailer 2 has already been released, and so far, the response has been fantastic. Produced by Sun Pictures, the much-awaited sequel is expected to hit the screens in 2026. Like Coolie, Jailer 2 also has the potential to touch the Rs 1000 crore mark globally.
Let us tell you, superstar Rajinikanth created a stir at the box office in 2023 with Jailer directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The film not only marked his comeback at the box office, but also emerged as one of the biggest money earners of Tamil cinema. However, the superstar could not repeat the same success with his previous release Vettaiyaan. Directed by TJ Gnanvel, the film was mediocre and broke Rajinikanth’s streak of blockbuster films.
Having said that, Thalaivar’s next two releases are going to be pure commercial entertainers. Both the films are highly promoted and are expected to break box office records and set new standards. Given the triumphant performance of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2, the makers need to realize the potential of the Hindi markets and promote both the Tamil releases well in the northern circuits to make a splash at the box office.
